The Bridge over Hindmarsh River, Victor Harbor. The Hindmarsh River rises in the Mount Lofty Ranges below Mount Cone and flows through the Hindmarsh Valley before reaching its mouth and emptying into Encounter Bay at Victor Harbor. John Monash established the South Australian Reinforced Concrete Company which built the Hindmarsh River Railway Bridge at Victor Harbor. This bridge is the first reinforced concrete bridge in Australia and one of the first reinforced concrete girder bridges

[General description] This is a photograph of the Commission appointing Captain Hindmarsh Governor of South Australia. A plaque underneath the Commission states: 'This original Commission appointing Captain John Hindmarsh, the first Governor of the Province of South Australia, was presented by his grandson John Hindmarsh Esq. of Napier, New Zealand to the State of South Australia, on 3rd May, 1906. The original seal is enclosed in this frame.' [On back of photograph] 'Print from negative made by Govt. Photographers and supplied by Board to Town Clerk, Adelaide, for transmission to Mr. John St. John Hindmarsh, Napier, NZ. June 1927 H.W.M.'

Tracing of map in three parts showing (1) sections along the Inman River, Hd. of Encounter Bay; (2) sections around Kerby's Hill (section 2408, north of Port Elliot), Hd. of Goolwa; and (3) sections along the Lower Murray from Goolwa township westwards, Hd. of Goolwa, with part of Hindmarsh Island sections, in the Hd. of Nangkita. The 'Line of Rail or Tramway' between Goolwa and Port Elliot is indicated as a dotted line; section 1 on Hindmarsh Island shown coloured green. These three Hundreds are all located in the County of Hindmarsh. Ink and watercolour on paper, ink notation. No scale given. Numbered 10) in top left hand corner. Congregational Church on the east side of Hindmarsh Square. Under the Reverend Francis Cox an impressive Congregational Church was built in Hindmarsh Square in 1861. It opened in 1862 and closed in 1926. Two young girls and a row of young men are leaning against a tiered fountain in front of the Congregational Church in Hindmarsh Church in 1873.

Former Congregational Church, Hindmarsh Square which was adapted for use and occupied by the Australian Broadcasting Commission in 1940. Compare with B 8520. Congregational Church, Hindmarsh Square in the south eastern corner of Hindmarsh Square and Grenfell Street. For alterations made in 1940 see B 10487. The building was designed by George Abbott with seating for 500 people but was closed in 1926.

Monochrome tinted lithograph by Black & Armstrong on wove paper of Mary Hindmarsh's sketch of 1837 depicting the original Government House in the distance, which was located east of King William Street and above the River Torrens. A horse drawn water cart and ancillary buildings can be seen nearer the foreground. An inscription faintly pencilled in immediately under the bottom edge says 'Government House December 1837'.

Watercolour painting of the 'South Australian Company's Bank, Adelaide', shown in the middle distance with a dirt road leading up to it. The location is believed to be North Terrace, west of King William Street, looking south from the Parklands near the Torrens. The artist has signed it in the bottom left hand corner, and dated it 25th July 1838 in the bottom right.

Mary Stephen, nee Hindmarsh

Mary Stephen, nee Hindmarsh, third and youngest daughter of the first governor of South Australia, Sir John Hindmarsh, and Susannah, nee Edmeades. Mary grew up in France and came to the province with her parents in 1836. A colonial artist she married George Milner Stephen in 1840. She died in London in 1887.

North west corner of Hindmarsh Square. Frontage of Adelaide Motor Works Garage (on extreme left, on west side of square) is 22 yards. Other buildings on the corner of Pulteney Street and Hindmarsh Square house more premises of The Adelaide Motor Car Works and Garage. Gays Arcade can be seen in the distance above the garage roof. The garage also offers cars on hire and stabled. Several cars and drivers are parked in front of these premises.

Hindmarsh Square, north side, October 5th 1897, right side of centre houses is 38 yards west of Pulteney Street. Businesses seen include A Walton and Company Confectioners, Pengelley and Hill carpenters, Griffiths Brothers wholesale tea, coffee and cocoa importers and merchants, and behind stands Robert Harper and Company. A glimpse of the iron paling fence protecting the Hindmarsh Square gardens can be seen.

Hindmarsh Square, North Side, October 19th 1937. The left side of single storey structure adjoining modern cement building (with Mobiloil sign) is 23 yards east of Pulteney Street. Frontage of the three nondescript buildings in centre is 25.5 yards. For alterations made in 1938 see B 8204. At the back of the photograph facing into Rundle Street stands the premises of Foy and Gibson Department Store. This north east corner of Hindmarsh Square is being used as a carpark.

The New Number 1 Studio in which this photograph was taken will be 54' x 30'. The beams and bearers shown will be removed and a new step-up ceiling will be constructed with indirect lighting embodied. A sound proof porch will be constructed over the back doors shown on the photograph which was taken 6 days after the commencement of contract. A new platform will extend across the full width of No. 1 Studio and the walls will be panelled with accoustic treatment. Studio was used from 1929- 1935 by National Stations 5CL and 5CK at Broadcast House, Hindmarsh Square, Adelaide. Photographed in 1935".
