August's father, Carl, came to SA in 1847 on ship "Hermann von Beckerath", aged 16, with his father and 3 brothers, aged 7 to 12. They settled in Bethany. Carl's fourth brother, Alexander, stayed in Germany with his pregnant mother, who was aged in her 40s. Alexander was only 3. In 1856 Alexander came to Australia on ship "Vesta" with his sister, Auguste, as well as her husband and baby. The following year, their mother arrived with the baby (now aged 10) who was born a few weeks after the men left for SA in 1847. She had never seen her father and brothers. The sons were now grown men, some married with children. When Alexander grew up, he married Maria Behn and they lived for many years in the Dimboola area.
