General notes

The Barque Joliba was built in 1860 in Arbroath, Scotland by the Arbroath Shipbuilding Company for David Simpson. She traded with the Baltic ports and Archangel, Russia, also with Mauritius, South Africa and India. She must have been in an Australian port, possibly Melbourne, in 1864. In 1869 she was sold to Lyttleton, NZ and traded with Australian ports. In 1878 she was sold to a Thomas Sinclair of Adelaide and in 1882 her owner is recorded as J.Neill. In the 1880s she traded mainly between W. Australian ports and the Cape, ending her days as a coal hulk for the Adelaide Steam Tug Co. There is a street, Joliba Way, in Warnbro, WA, named after her. The most dramatic incident in her career in Australia came when she was saved from fire while being repaired in floating dock at Williamstown, Port Philip in October 1871. She was dragged away from the fire by the steamer Resolute, but was extensively damaged. The incident is described in the Australian and New Zealand papers. [From information provided].

Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
