Government Motor Garage Pirie Street

Government Motor Garage Pirie Street

Building previously the Golden Rule Hotel, 29 August 1941, east corner of Pirie Street and Moger Lane. Frontage is 16 yards. A researcher has added that this building plus the addition behind, going all the way to the end of Moger Lane, and the addition immediately to the right in the photo were all part of the South Australian Government Motor Garage premises. The Government Motor Garage occupied some of this site from 1902 (initially starting as stables to hold the ministerial sulkies) while the Hotel on the corner was still operating. The Hotel lost its licence in 1909 and some time after that was taken over by the garage which occupied the entire site up until 1967, when it moved to new premises in Gilles St, Adelaide. See also photos B14236 and B14237. This hotel existed since 1847 and was also known as Northumberland Arms and the Golden Rule Inn. It was not gazetted after 1908 and appears to be a dwelling in this photograph taken in 1941.
