Summary

[General description] The Servants' Home, originally established in 1862 in Gilles Street moved to this two storey stone building in 1876. The Home provided temporary accommodation for newly arrived female immigrants, and for servants who were convalescing or temporarily unemployed. It closed about 1896. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 271 / Flinders Street, south side / showing the old Servants Home which later became Educational buildings / The left side of the building abuts Gawler Place / Frontage along Flinders Street: 19 yards / Presented by Mrs. C. Barnes, Barnes Road, Payneham' (Another hand) 'For a later view of this building (with the white door near centre bricked up), see Report of the State Children's Council for the Year ended June 30th 1914, penultimate page'.
