The four storey building on the left is the premises of Walker and Hall, manufacturers of cutlery and silverware. E.S. Wigg and Son, stationers, is next door and further along is L.G. Abbott & Company, wallpaper and paint merchants. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 144 / Grenfell Street, south side / August 3, 1927 / On the left is Coromandel Place. On the right is Gawler Place. Walker and Hall's frontage: 9.5 yards. / Cantilever verandah erected in front of all buildings in 1927.'

Grenfell Street, south side, 29th May 1964, frontage of building is 28.5 yards. Right side of the building abuts Gawler Place. Left side of the building abuts French Street. The building is named "ES Wigg and Sons Ltd", established in 1849. In 1921 ES Wigg and Son moved from Rundle Street to 65-69 Gremfell Street on the Coromandell Place corner. The successful book and stationery shop was founded after Edgar Wigg emigrated to Adelaide in 1849

Selborne Hotel, Pirie Street

Selborne Hotel, Pirie Street, north side, November 25th 1935, right side of hotel is 36 yards west of Gawler Place and frontage is 16.5 yards. The Selborne Hotel was an early meeting place for the United Trades and Labor Council. On 13 June 1890 Mrs Milne, Mrs Reuin and Miss Vincent were welcomed as delegates representing the newly formed Working Women's Trades Union. For alterations made to the Selborne Hotel in 1936 see B 6944. At the time of this photograph the proprietor of the hotel was TF Dollard.

[General description] Built in 1857, this bluestone church has an impressive octagonal tower. The Sunday School building, to the right of the church, was commenced in 1863. The Church buildings were demolished in 1973 to make way for the Wakefield Tower. See B 27607 for a front view of the Church taken before its demolition. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 302 / Wakefield St., north side / 1896 / Unitarian Church and Sunday School / On the left is Victoria Place. Right side of two story house next door (east) to Sunday School is 7 yards west of Gawler Place.'

[General description] Portrait in an oval frame of John Hector, first salaried officer of the Savings Bank of S.A. He started trading in a single room in Gawler Place on the 11th March, 1848. It was provided rent-free by the Glen Osmond Mining Company.

Motor Car

Motor Car

The first combustion engine motor car built in South Australia by the Lewis Cycle and Motor Works in Gawler Place, Adelaide. The Lewis No.1 car had a two horsepower air-cooled engine. Vivian Lewis is at the wheel, with T.P. O'Grady beside him, and Murray Aunger, the Lewis Cycle works star racing cyclist, is seated just ahead of the front wheel. Workmen from the Lewis Cycle and Motor Works stand around. November 1900.
