Rundle Street, north side, between Charles Street and Giles Street (Gawler Place) Businesses occupying the premises from 88, 86, 84, 82 Rundle Street include Kingsborough and Upton Drapers, JM Wendt and KL Vosz. Futher along next to a stone fronted building stands Wills and Company. At number 78 is Brandons, and at number 74 stands FE Carlin's business. All along the street horses and carts wait patiently for their owners.

Carlin, Ironmonger. Further on is the premises of Hart, Bootmaker; J. White; then R. Clisby's. The extreme left is roughly 29 yards east of the north east corner of Rundle Street and Gawler Place. The extreme right is 66 yards east of the corner.

The shop advertises it sells saws, fancy goods, wedding presents, enamelware, tinware, dinner sets, toilet sets, tea sets, glassware, tools and cutlery. [On back of photograph] Acre 43. [General description] This new seven storey building is of brick and rendered concrete and is situated on the north east corner of Rundle Street and Gawler place. Rundle Street, north side, left of Redford Clisby's(1812-1884) Music Shop is 29 yards east of Gawler Place. Two men and a lady are standing on the steps to the shop. Possibly they include Redford Clisby and his wife Eliza Sarah Clisby (1812-1898). The second man is possibly the new owner Mr GH Egremont-Gee.

Wendt's Jewellers first moved from Pirie to Rundle Street in 1852 and had various premises in the vicinity.The business occupied this building since December, 1904. Rundle Street, north side, November 9, 1962. Centre building is David Jones which was completed in 1962. Right side of centre building (David Jones) abuts west side of Gawler Place. For a view of the building previously on this site see B 14310. Edments Building housing Prouds Jewellers and Edments Silverware can seen on the right of the photograph. The statue on the front of the David Jones building is called "Progress" and was created by Dadswell for Davis Jones. It represents the ambitions of the city. The complex planar figure was developed to absorb and reflect light on its surface. The figure is reminiscent of the neo-cubism style.

Holden & Birks on Rundle Street, Adelaide

Rundle Street, Adelaide, at the south west corner of Gawler Place. Three men and a dog stand outside the premises of Holden & Birks, saddlers. The firm has just been established, but in 1875 this partnership will be dissolved to become J.A. Holden & Co., which is the forerunner to the manufacturer of Australia's famous Holden motor cars. The parapet of this building features ornate mouldings. Note the drinking fountain on the corner. See B 2244 and B 3310 for changes in later years.
