Clare, the old gum tree

Clare, the old gum tree

[General description] Clare, the old gum tree. Sturdy gum tree with a wide girth in a rural setting. A water tank and fences can be seen in the photograph. [On back of photograph] Situated on the bank of the Hutt River to the right of the Clare Brewery, looking south. It was under this tree that the pioneer of Clare, E.B. Gleeson, pitched his tent. He had a retinue of Hindu servants, one of whom was named Gongo, an expert axeman who chopped out a kind of easy chair in the trunk. Above it is the incision that held one end of the ridge pole of his tent, now calloused over. There are many pleasant memories attached to the old tree. A limb now fallen and lying to the right, was often used by the daughters of widow Nolan on Sunday afternoons, for fixing swings for the pleasure of the children who had no Sunday School to attend. Near it on the left was Gleeson's waterhole, where the youths of Clare learned to swim.
