Summary

Clare, the Main Street. Photograph taken 26th February 1933 shows the Main North Road lined with shops, a garage, a bank and a church. The town was established in 1842 by John Horrocks and named after his ancestral home in County Clare, Ireland. Original inhabitants were the Ngadjuri people. White settlers originally named it Inchiquin. Clare Valley was known for its copper, farming and the first grapes were grown in 1851 by Jesuit priests from Silesia (Poland).
