Coming into the township of Clare in approximately 1909. The area was originally the principal camping and burial grounds of the Ngadjuri people. Clare was first named Inchiquin and later changed its name to Clare after Country Clare in Ireland, the home town of Edward Burton Gleeson who established the township in 1842. The layout of the town was done by a draughtsman in Adelaide who had no local knowledge thus some of the roads stop abruptly at cliff faces only to continue at the top of the cliff again.

Clare, panoramic view looking southward. The town was established in 1842 by John Horrocks and named after his ancestral home in County Clare, Ireland. Original inhabitants were the Ngadjuri people. White settlers originally named it Inchiquin. Clare Valley was known for its copper, farming and the first grapes were grown in 1851 by Jesuit priests from Silesia (Poland). Photograph was taken on 26th February 1933. According to a researcher, the roof of the building in the centre of the view belongs to the "old town hall" the squared tower is over the main street entrance.

Bowley's Bridge, Clare named after the generations of Bowleys who have lived in Clare. Thomas Bowley born in 1850 was married twice and had 13 children. There is a Bowley's Hill and Bowley's House which was the first stone cottage to be built in Clare by the grandfather of Mayor AJ Bowley. The photograph shows a ricketty wooden plank bridge crossing the river near a vineyard.

Explorer John Hill became acquainted with this river in 1839 and discovered that it ran northwards from Sevenhills through Clare until its confluence with the Broughton River south of Spalding.
