Two items were not retained: a newspaper cutting from 'The Chronicle', Saturday 10 March 1917, page 29, featuring three photos: 'Picturesque scene on the Torrens at Gilberton ...'; the General Committee and the Ladies Committee. The main photo was by Krischock, the others are attributed to 'Presto'. The photos were taken the previous week on 3 March 1917.; and a newspaper cutting from 'The Observer', Saturday 20 February 1926, page 32, featuring images from the Australian Diving and Swimming Championships held at the Gilberton Club.

Major Edward Castle Oldham (who died at Lone Pine on 25 April 1915) is third from the right in the front row. It would appear that this photo is roughly contemporary with the group in PRG 280/1/26/289.

John Stephenson arrived in South Australia in April 1839 on board the ship the "Fairfield". Clerk: collector for The Register, messenger for the Bank of South Australia; Adelaide, North Adelaide.

Group of Army Officers at a Happy Valley Camp, Easter, 1911, 10th Australian Infantry Regiment Militia, Adelaide Rifles. The Commanding Officer was Lt. Col. Le Mesurier. The man 6th from left in the back row is Hillary William Neale; third from the left in the middle row is Lieutenant Ernest Albert Warren. In the front row is W. R. McKeevor (on left), Francis Malcolm Blair, [a researcher suggests that this is actually Miles Fitzroy Beevor], Murray Robertson Coghill, Stanley Price Weir (later 10th Battalion AIF), John James Hughes (later 32nd Battalion, AIF), Leonard Watkins Bickle and Oldham. Major Edward Castle Oldham (who died at Lone Pine on 25 April 1915) is third from the right in the front row. Believed to' 'represent the 2 SA infantry milita battalions of the period 1902-1912 ie the 10th Australin Infantry Regiment (10th AIR) and the South Australian Infantry Regiment (SAIR)'.


James Sadler
James Sadler was born in Adelaide in 1860 and died in 1935. After working as a clerk in the Education Department and as an inspector for the Savings Bank of SA he was involved in recruiting for the Adelaide Literary Society. He was also the London Correspondent for the SA Register. Some of his published works include: The Proclamation Tree (1888); The Footballer (1890); Lyrics and Rhymes (1890); Fall In (1914), Some Annals of Adelaide (1933).

A collection of photographs with views of coastline on Kangaroo Island and at Rapid Bay, the lighthouse at Cape Jervis, shipwrecks on the Coorong and Wardang Island, Renmark, Kopperamanna Lutheran Mission, and other places in South Australia. Photographs 1-9 were taken by Rev. N. H. Louwyck, for the Centenary, 8 September 1936 of the landing of Col. William Light at Rapid Bay South Australia. Photographs 10 (see series 22 photo 29), 20, 48 are missing from the set.

Personal papers arranged alphabetically
The series consists of personal papers relating to particular events in the life of J S Ostoja-Kotkowski. It includes material relating to his archives albums, awards such as the Order of Australia, early documents on Germany, his migration, Melbourne, Leigh Creek, oral history and address books. Items 40-43 added 2009.


The 'Otago' at Port Adelaide
The iron barque 'Otago', 346 tons, at Port Adelaide [iron 3 mast barque, 367 gross, 345 net tons. ON60463. 147.0 x 26.0 x 14.0 Built 1869 (10) A Stephen and Sons, Glasgow. Owners: Angus Cameron, registered Glasgow: Jan. 1872 Thomas Grierson and others, registered Port Adelaide. Nov. 1886 JL Simpson and partners: August 1900 CJF Gerber, registered Sydney 1902/1903 Huddart, Parker Ltd, who converted the vessel into a coal hulk and took it to Hobart. Sold in 1931 and abandoned on the bank in a bay of the Derwent. This is not the vessel made famous by reason of Joseph Conrad taking over as master and bringing it to Port Adelaide when her master (and part owner) died in Bay of Bengal]


Photograph albums kept by the Scammell family
Two photograph albums kept by the Scammell family. Many carte-de-visites of people were taken in England or in South Australia but are unnamed. A collection of CDVs of the British Royal family begins the second album. Album 1 ends at photograph 40; album 2 begins at number 41 and ends at 153. Tannery, Hindmarsh
David Reids 'Stirlingshire' Tannery on the northern bank of the River Torrens. David Reid was born at Stirling, Scotland in 1823; emigrated to Victoria in 1857 and thence to Adelaide in 1859, where he entered the tannery of a Mr Dench, as foreman. Later he established the 'Stirlingshire Tannery' and at the time of his death he was employing 60 people. The tannery was then taken over by his son J.H. Reid. See article in 'Adelaide and Vicinity' (1901), page 520.


Pulteney and Rundle Streets corner, Adelaide
Corner of Pulteney and Rundle Streets, Adelaide. Photographed in 1914-1915 (1915 is the only year in which the Savings Bank appears in the SA Directory next to Craven's). Right side of Craven's is 35 yards east of Pulteney Street. An additional storey was added in 1926. See B 4707 & 4709.


First School Memorial
First South Australian School Memorial plaque on North Terrace west, erected in 1836, opposite Trinity Church. It was unveiled by the Minister of Education on December 4th, 1936. The inscription reads "Near this site the first school of the South Australian School Society was opened on 28 May, 1838. The first schoolmaster was John Banks Shepherdson. The building afterwards housed the first Public Library. Erected by the South Australian Public Teachers Union and the Adelaide City Council 1936".
