Summary

Group of Army Officers at a Happy Valley Camp, Easter, 1911, 10th Australian Infantry Regiment Militia, Adelaide Rifles. The Commanding Officer was Lt. Col. Le Mesurier. The man 6th from left in the back row is Hillary William Neale; third from the left in the middle row is Lieutenant Ernest Albert Warren. In the front row is W. R. McKeevor (on left), Francis Malcolm Blair, [a researcher suggests that this is actually Miles Fitzroy Beevor], Murray Robertson Coghill, Stanley Price Weir (later 10th Battalion AIF), John James Hughes (later 32nd Battalion, AIF), Leonard Watkins Bickle and Oldham. Major Edward Castle Oldham (who died at Lone Pine on 25 April 1915) is third from the right in the front row. Believed to' 'represent the 2 SA infantry milita battalions of the period 1902-1912 ie the 10th Australin Infantry Regiment (10th AIR) and the South Australian Infantry Regiment (SAIR)'.

Edward Castle Oldham: served 5 years in ranks, and 10 years commissioned service; Area Officer, Captain, Area 78B (St. Peters); appointed 1 Nov 1910; Seconded from Captain, 10th AIR (Adelaide Rifles, 1st Bn); Captain, 78th Infantry (Adelaide Rifles) 1 July 1908; killed in action at Lone Pine, central Anzac, on 25 April 1915, aged 38. Buried Beach cemetery.

Ernest Albert Warren: Lieutenant, 27th Battalion B Company; born 02 November 1887 at Mount Gambier, SA, son of Ernest Warren and Mary Eleanor nee Cook; occupation prior to enlistment Bank Manager; unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A2 Geelong on 31 May 1915; served in France, killed in action 5 November 1916 at Warlencourt, Somme, France; commemorated at Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.

A researcher has suggested that the name of the 10th Australian Regiment changed in 1912, and was known as the 78th Regiment until 1919. This photo appeared in 'The Observer' 22 April 1911, page 8. Lieut.-Colonel Leonard Watkins Bickle was a married medical practitioner from Sydney who enlisted on 11 October 1915, embarked on board HMAT A4 'Pera" on 13 October 1915 and returned to Australia 12 October 1916, after serving with the Australian Army Medical Corps. Francis Malcolm Blair appears on the Boer War nominal roll where he served with the 1st South Australian Mounted Rifles. An article about the camp appeared in 'The Observer', Saturday 22 April 1911, page 44; Bickle appears in another photo in 'The Chronicle', Saturday 20 April 1912, page 30. There is a line drawing of Blair is the 'South Australian Register', Saturday 1 December 1900, page 5.
