Summary

[General description] This impressive Art Deco theatre was built by MGM in 1939, co-designed by American theatre designer Thomas W Lamb and Adelaide architect Frank Kenneth Milne. It had a seating capacity of 1,286. The movie playing at this time is 'Ninotchka' with Greta Garbo and Melvyn Douglas. 'Gone With the Wind' is a coming attraction. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 51 / Hindley Street, north side / 23 June 1940 / Metro Theatre / Theatre erected in 1939 / Compare with B 7741 and B 7768 / The near side of theatre abuts Victoria Street / Frontage of theatre (the part under cantilever verandah) is 14 yards'.
