Kosmopolitan Klub album

Kosmopolitan Klub album

Album of photographs of a girls' group - originally known as the 'Kosmopolitan Klub' and later as 'The Girls' - which formed in the 1930s and continued into their old age (all now deceased). The eight school girls were from Adelaide Technical High School and pledged 'not to marry or become engaged until 1940. The first girl to break the pledge was to pay 5 pounds to the 'No-Marriage Club's funds.' The first breakaway occurred in 1934 and the group changed its mind, turning the club into a social and welfare organisation. The album covers only the first few years (1930-32), and inlcudes a Gulf trip on the 'Moonta', staying at family cottages 'Wonga Wonga' and 'Wurli', outings with boy friends and travels around SA. People are not identified, although the book 'We were going to be different : the story of the Kosmopolitan Klub and the Girls' by Anne Rawson (1998) identifies them. An article about the club appeared in 'The News' 15 February 1934, page 1.

Karkarilla Mine, Moonta

Karkarilla Mine, Moonta

Engine and boiler house erected in the 1860s, Karkarilla Mine, Moonta. Rich ore was found in 1862, but after two years was offered for sale at little more than 1,000 pounds. Opened again and re-named Hamley after the Acting Governor in 1868. Closed again until 1900 taken over by Wallaroo and Moonta Co. and worked as a low-grade mine. Notes on the back of the photograph read "The Karkarilla mine adjoins the Moonta mine leases on the southern boundary and the lode was believed to be a continuation of the main Moonta lode (Elders and Taylors). Rich ore was found in 1862, but after a year or two operations were suspended and the property which had been mortgaged to a bank was offered for sale at little more than one thousand pounds. A little later a new company under Sir William Morgan bought the property and shortly afterwards picked up another lode further west which was believed to be a continuation of Beddome's on the Moonta leases; the company was re-named Hamley after the Acting Governor at that time (1868) A few years later Karkarilla was again closed down and remained idle until after 1900, when another attempt was made to re-open it - this photo taken about that time. The Wallaroo and Moonta Company took it over and worked it as a low grade proposition during the 1914-1918 war period."

Carrier's Cart, Moonta

Carrier's Cart, Moonta

Horse drawn cart being the J. N. Ellery "Parcel express", carrier, thought to be at Moonta. Information from a researcher: 'In 1909, the West Picture Company, which in the previous year had opened Adelaide's first permanent picture theatre, expanded to rural areas of South Australia with weekly picture shows at Gawler, Balaklava, Kadina, Wallaroo, Port Pirie and Moonta. The Moonta picture show was scheduled to open in the Institute Hall on 29 October 1909. Unfortunately, the electric plant did not arrive from Sydney and the picture show opened the following week. (Wallaroo and Kadina where able to open on time as those towns had a local electricity supply.) I am confident that the photo was taken in the first week of November 1909 when the films were being delivered along with a 'petrol electric picture show set' (see page 41 of "Adelaide's Silent Nights" for a photo of one of these and compare it to the one on the back of the cart.) More importantly, I do not think the person on the cart is J.N. Ellery. I think it is T.J. West who is a significant figure in Australian cinema history. (See "Adelaide's Silent Nights" for a photo of T.J. West.)'.

Recruiting Train

Recruiting Train

[General description] The locomotive of this train has been decorated with flags and sports a British coat-of-arms and Union Jack on its front. Recruiting drives like this came about as the Australian Army did not conscript. Here is part of a newspaper article at the time: 'The Recruiting Train: Mr. Vaughan (Premier of South Australia) said arrangements had been completed for the running of the special recruiting train over the northern and western lines on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday next, and he anticipated that it would prove a great incentive to recruiting. About 12 prominent speakers would travel with the train, together with the Military Camp Band. The secretary of the State War Council (Mr. Victor Ryan) had visited the 19 local committees concerned, and he reported that they were taking up the matter enthusiastically, and big meetings were expected. Tradesmen agreed to close their premises while the meetings were being held. The flour and chaff mills and the wheat agents had promised to suspend operations so as to give the employees an opportunity of attending the meetings. Evening meetings would be held at Port Pirie and Laura on Tuesday, and at Wallaroo and Moonta on Wednesday, and day meetings as follows: Tuesday: Owen, Balaklava, Brinkworth, Georgetown, Gladstone. Wednesday: Crystal Brook, Gulnare, Snowtown, Bute, Kadina. Thursday: Wallaroo Mines, Paskeville, Port Wakefield, Hamley Bridge, Gawler. Where possible provision would be made for the enlistment and medical examination of recruits at the meetings.' This extract is from the following article: 'AUSTRALIA'S NEW ARMY. (1916, March 24). The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889-1931), p. 7.9 [On back of photograph] 'Special recruiting train which ran over the north and north western lines / March 28-30, 1916.

From Back of Rectory Willunga (Watercolour)

From Back of Rectory Willunga (Watercolour)

This work depicts a rural scene at Willunga looking 'From Back of Rectory'. It was painted 30 November, 1904 and is part of a selection of watercolour paintings by amateur artist, Thomas Wood, featuring scenes of Hahndorf, Port Augusta, Salt Creek near Port Lincoln, Port Lincoln, Calicalinga (Carrickalinga), Mount Barker, Wallaroo, Willunga and Noarlunga. Wood chose to uniquely sign his work with a symbol consisting of a design based on his initials, rather than a signature as such. This work depicts specific details of the scene including three visible "fallow" labelled in pencil, indicating fertilised areas of ground. The work also features the homestead, nestled into the side of a hill slope. The artist has included a tiny pencil drawing of another structure in the distance, in the centre of the work. Wood has also included three head of cattle in the foreground to indicate scale and to represent the rural nature of the setting. The skyline is met by a bright blue coastline which is in contrast to the dryness of the landscape. Although an amateur, Wood has provided an acurate example of the geography of the Willunga area in the early 1900's.

Hahndorf (Watercolour)

Hahndorf (Watercolour)

This work depicts a scene at Hahndorf. It was painted 16 April, 1910 and is part of a selection of watercolour paintings by amateur artist, Thomas Wood, featuring scenes of Hahndorf, Port Augusta, Salt Creek near Port Lincoln, Port Lincoln, Calicalinga (Carrickalinga), Mount Barker, Wallaroo, Willunga and Noarlunga. Instead of the unique signature symbol used in the work entitled 'From back of refectory' 1904, Wood has simply titled and dated this work. Wood attempts to create an ideal setting by limiting details to the bottom third section of the composition. A pencil line, where he has gauged the horizon, is still visible. This technique is used to intensify the scene. The eye is lead from the bottom left, where the fence begins to the centre of the path where two tiny figures stand. From there the path is followed to a low horizon line where eucalypts create a blue haze. In comparison to the two girls, the trees on either side of the path appear gigantic, which is indicative of the deeply wooded area around Hahndorf. The artist has consciously used techniques for creating distance and scale in this work and may be considered illustrative or contrived. However, the work is also a good example of what Hahndorf might have looked like in 1910, which is perhaps similar to how it appears now in some areas. The low horizon line extends to an atmosphere which further intensifies the tree canopy and the tiny figures below. Despite his amateur status as an artist, Wood has been able to illustrate a scene with conviction. Although an amateur, Wood has provided an acurate example of the geography of the Hahndorf area in the early 1900's.
