Historical information

Stephen Lathern migrated to South Australia via Melbourne with his wife, the sister of H.R. Hancock, manager of Moonta and Wallaroo mines, in 1880. He settled in Moonta and became accountant of the mines. In 1902, while occupying that position, one of his nephews was married in his house. He left the mines shortly afterwards and there is evidence he may have farmed on the South Coast of New South Wales for a few years. His wife died in 1910 at McLaren Vale, to where it appears he had retired; and the family history is that he shot himself in the bedroom he was using in the same nephew's house at Wallaroo Mines (where the nephew was manager) in 1917 aged about 75.
