Group of people on the verandah of 'Summerlea', Victor Harbor

Group of people, mostly women and children, on the verandah of 'Summerlea', Coral Street, Victor Harbor. The house was owned by Mrs Ruby E. Stock (a widow) who lived there with her four children - Bessie, Bob, Ken and Gerald. It is believed that Mrs Stock is the lady seated on the right, with glasses, and that her three sons are in the foreground closest to the camera, one holding one of her (locally) famous dogs - she collected money for the Red Cross during World War 2 by tying collecting tins to the dogs. The woman 5th from left, not looking at the camera, is Miss Dorothy Graham (1889-1975) who worked at 'Summerlea' as the housekeeper for over 30 years; the woman to her right (4th from left) is possibly her co-worker Hilda Stevens.

View of Adare, Victor Harbor, taken by amateur photographer O.B.Hutchinson in 1894 and enclosed in letter to his uncle Peter Orlando Hutchinson, of Sidmouth, Devon. The letter accompanying is dated 30 April 1894. On the back of the original Hutchinson has written "This shows the place where Mr Hindmarsh lived, of whom you have no doubt heard years ago. In the foreground is the bridge over the River Hindmarsh near its mouth. That river separates Mr Hay's property from this, and if these two views be laid about 3 inches apart, this one on the right hand, it will give their approximate position. The distant hill is called Peeralilla, near to which we live. Sorry it is not a better photo." [The other view referred to can be seen at B 70609.]

The letter accompanying is dated 30 April 1894. On the back of the original Hutchinson has written "View on the road about half a mile from Port Victor. The railway from Adelaide and the main road are here running side by side. The building close to the road is Mr Hay's Lodge, and the entrance gate alongside. Mr Hay's house is on the hill and, as will be seen, is rather a pretentious structure, containing about 22 rooms. Behind a telegraph pole is my pony-cart and my mare 'Bella'. This road is about 100 yards from the sea."
