Lord Kitchener inspecting returned officers from the South African War ('Members of the South African Medal Corps') in the grounds of Government House, Adelaide during his visit to South Australia in January 1910. From left: General Hoad; Sir Day Bosanquet, Governor of South Australia, wearing a naval uniform; Colonel Frank M. Rowell (in light uniform and helmet); Lord Kitchener; Dr W. Ramsay Smith; Professor [formerly Major] Watson; Majors Blair and Stapleton and Constable Wells. [Other identified but unsure as to which person they are are: Lieutenant CoCilaloh, Lieutenant Peckman, Colonel Kirkpatrick and Colonel Pattinson - possibly behind the main group.] A photo taken during the same event was published in 'The Chronicle', Saturday 29 January 1910, page 29.

A researcher has suggested that the location is South Africa, during the Boer War (1899-1902). The soldiers are holding Lee Enfield rifles, which were introduced in 1895.

Writing case and letters

A leather writing case featuring a metal clasp and handle on the outside, with compartments inside to hold letters, paper and envelopes, pens and other writing materials. Inside the case were stored letters and papers relating to Samuel Grau Hubbe and family, and a small album of photographs of the five Hubbe children. See below for details.

Studio portrait of Arthur Cecil Carlin Hammond, son of Cecil Henry Hammond and Fanny Marian Carlin, and grandson of Octavius and Anne Hammond, dressed in a tunic and toga costume in ancient Greek or Roman style. Private Arthur Hammond, no. 149, took part in the Boer War and enlisted with the 5th Mounted Infantry, Colonial Military Forces of Western Australia and embarked on 6 March 1901 with the 5th Contingent from Western Australia. He died of wounds at Waterval River, Transvaal, South Africa on 1 February 1902.
