A group of South Australian Boer War veterans gathered together in the grounds of Government House to meet Lord Kitchener during his visit to Adelaide in 1910. According to a researcher, the officer lying down on the right hand side at the front, leaning on his right elbow, is William De Passe who served in the Zulu War and Boer War and was in the Light Horse Training Corp.

Diary of Trooper Miles Fletcher Swan

Boer War diary of Trooper Miles Fletcher Swan, No.9, who joined the 3rd South Australian Bushmen's Contingent whilst working on Nagwarry Station, Penola. The diary is handwritten in pencil in a small Army Memo book, 11 x 17.5 cm, and includes descriptions of looting farms for food and makeshift hospitals set up for soldiers with fever, as well as conflict with the Boers and their good treatment of wounded Australian soldiers. Also includes a biography of Swan's life before and after the war. Diary entries are not in chronological order. The first entry, for 12 September 1900, is written in the middle of the memo book, with the entries on the first fiew pages dating from December 1900. A transcript bearing the title 'Copy of Diary of Trooper M. F. Swan of the 3rd South Australian Bushmens Contingent Boer War 1900-1901' is available (entries arranged in chronological order). Also included is an appendix which is a typescript of an article by Swan that appeared in 'The Advertiser' on Friday 11 January 1901.

S.A. Imperial Bushmen's Corp

S.A. Imperial Bushmen's Corps, 4th Contingent. The President of the South Australian Boer War Association has provided the following information: 'The fourth contingent to depart from Port Adelaide for South Africa and was the first to be funded wholly by the Imperial Government, previous contingents having been funded by the South Australian Government and public subscription. This photograph was taken at the Old Exhibition Grounds training camp on the eastern side of Frome Road, below the Adelaide Hospital, a day or two before embarkation. The 4th South Australian Imperial Bushmen was the largest contingent South Australia had committed to the war to that point, comprising 12 officers and 122 men under Lt. Col. James Rowell. They embarked on "Manhattan" troopship on 1 May 1900. In a tough tour of duty lasting more than a year the contingent lost 13 men dead to enemy action, disease and accident. The contingent sailed for home on 7 July 1901.'

The entries are often long and detailed, but are not necessarily made daily, and not all are in sequence: 24 June to 18 July appears on pages 1-100; 16 May to 15 June appears on pages 101-138; 6 August to 9 August is on 4 loose folios; and entries for 12 August to 14 August appear on pages 139-147.

Diary written by Martin U. Maddern 23 April - 13 November 1900. M.U. Maddern was a YMCA representative with Queensland troops of the South Africa war. The diary refers to camp life at Lytton (Queensland), on board the troop ship 'Manchester Port' and to South Africa.

Studio photograph of South Australian nurses titled 'Patriotic nurses for South Africa'. The surnames of the nurses are: Stephenson, Cocks, O'Shanahan, Watts, Bidmead (later became leader of the group of nurses) and Glenie. The second Anglo-Boer war at the turn of the century provided South Australian women with a unique opportunity of participate as active citizens in the public sphere. Through the support of the community the small contingent of South Australian nurses worked tirelessly in conjunction with the Imperial Resources to provide nursing services in South Africa. The nurses received service medals from the King and Martha Bidmead received the Royal Red Cross and Devoted Service Cross.
