Standing erect, he confidently faces the camera wearing full dress uniform with much gold braid and a tall headdress decorated with feathers. On his chest he wears medals including the star and badge of a Knight Commander. He was a controversial governor for South Australia, socially conservative and favouring conscription and capital punishment. [On back of photograph] 'Sir Henry Galway'.

Sir Henry Lionel Galway, 17th Governor of South Australia 1914-1920. Originally Gallwey, he changed his name to Galway in 1911. While Governor he managed to upset a wide spectrum of the public. He supported compulsory military training, he supported gambling, he opposed prohibition, he opposed women's enfranchisement, he opposed the White Australia Policy, he said the trade unionists should be conscripted. His appointment was not renewed and he returned to England in 1920.

Lady Galway Home
Lady Galway Home for Convalescent Soldiers, Henley Beach August 1938. Lady Galway, married to Sir Henry Galway Governor of South Australia was a British charity and civic worker and advocate for women's rights. The home was opened in 1916 after the work performed by the charity outgrew the Ballroom at Government House. The British Red Cross Society packed items for members of the Australian Defence personnel serving overseas. The home was used by returning soldiers of any rank who needed a period of rest.

Soldiers marching in a military parade past a saluting base in front of the Town Hall, Adelaide where Sir Henry Galway, Governor of South Australia takes the salute; two men with collecting boxes are in the foreground. This photo appeared in 'The Observer' newspaper, Saturday 27 April 1918, page 23, along with a description of the parade: 'Returned Soldiers' Building Fund Appeal. The appeal which is being made to the public in behalf of our returned sailors and soldiers for a central home or clubhouse was continued on Saturday afternoon, when a fine programme of sports was contested on the Juibilee Oval. The military authorities lent their hearty co-operation, with the result that one of the finest processions which has been seen in Adelaide for some time was witnessed by thousands of patriotic citizens, who thronged the main thoroughfares of the metropolis.' This particular photo was captioned 'The infantry marching past th saluting base at the Town Hall. His Excellency the Governor (Sir Henry Galway) is seen taking the salute.'

22 World War 1 era badges, and two World War 2 era badges, (also known as campaign buttons or 'tinnies') donated by a member to the South Australian branch of the RSL. Most badges were designed and created to be purchased as a fundraising interest, in order to raise money for various factions of the Red Cross. Included are badges created for occasions such as Australia Day, Wattle Day and Violet Day, as well as badges designed for charity groups including the Red Cross, the Cheer-Up Society and the R.S.A. (Returned Soldiers' Association, which later became the R.S.L.). See below for details.
