Barker Monument, (Capt. Collet Barker) Mt. Barker, unveiled by Agnes Dobson in 1903. The inscription on the monument reads "erected to the memory of Captain Collet Barker of HM 39th Regiment of Foot who discovered the District and Mount which bears his name. He was killed by the blacks on the 30th April 1831 while endeavouring to ascertain the communication between Lake Alexandrina and Encounter Bay." He was killed at the mouth of the River Murray.

Mount Barker was originally home of the Peramangk Aboriginal people and the actual summit is possibly one of the most sacred Aboriginal sites near Adelaide. Mount Barker was sighted by Captain Charles Sturt in 1830 and surveyed by Duncan McFarlane in 1839 for the possibility of farming wheat and grain.

[General description] Gawler Street, Mount Barker, looking west up the hill towards Auchendarroch, the summer residence of the Barr Smith family. Township buildings line the street in which cars are parked. The car in the centre of the road was one of three registered to the Murray Aunger Motor Company in February 1918. A Dodge Tourer, parked on the right near the Savings Bank, was registered to J.G.H. Paech of Callington in June 1924. [General description] This photograph of John Dunn's steam mill shows it in dilapidated condition. It was opened at Mount Barker in 1844 and was highly productive, being in operation for around fifty years. It was South Australia's first steam mill outside of Adelaide. [On back of photograph] 'Flour mill at Mt. Barker / Erected in 1844 by the late John Dunn / 1938 / Reproduced in the News, September 2nd, 1938'.

Mt. Barker Mill. John Dunn, mill owner in Devon arrived in South Australia in 1840 and built a windmill for grinding flour on land near his brother's property. This was possibly the first windmill in Australia. The sails on his windmill had a fixed mechanism so could not always catch the wind. His first steam mill, built in Mount Barker, began working in 1844. Dunn's milling and grain business grew until he had 11 steam mills

[General description] This view shows a white mill silhouetted against the sky and standing in a clearing with a few trees and scrub in the background. The mill, on Windmill Hill, Mt. Barker Road was built by F.R. Nixon in 1842 but changed hands soon after. Milling ceased in 1864 and in 1890 the sails were burned in a bushfire.

[General description] This is a bronze tablet which is to be erected at Nixon's Mill, Windmill Hill, Mt. Barker Road. The text on it reads: 'Preserved as a memorial of the pioneering days of South Australia / This windmill was built by F.R. Nixon in 1842 who sold it to Walter Paterson in 1844. It was worked by him until 1853 when it was sold to F.W. Wittwer. It ceased operations in 1864 and was donated to the public in 1928 by A.E. Braendler / Tablet presented by Walter Paterson's grandchildren' [On back of photograph] An article describing the process behind the renovation of this historic mill has been cut from the Advertiser, January 11th, 1929 and is attached to the back of the photograph.

It housed the stationmaster and a ticketing office. It was a station on the Victor Harbor line. The photograph shows the extensive rose gardens adjacent to the station.
