"Cherrington", Mount Barker

"Cherrington", Mount Barker

Cherrington, Mount Barker. Off Hawthorn Road (off the Adelaide Road), built as the homestead of an 80 acre farm owned by William Tonkin, sold to Mr. Teakle who rented the building to Mr and Mrs Harrison for the Harrison Ladies' School. It was not called "Cherrington" until later. Mrs Harrison also had another school in Gawler Street, Mount Barker. Cherrington was built by William Tonklin. Mr David Teakle who lived in it also owned land from the Adelaide Road back to Dunn's Run. The photograph shows the family including five small girls and servants standing on the verandah and in the garden.

Residence of John Dunn, Sen., Mt. Barker. The Dunns owned flour mills in the new colony. A note on the back of the photograph reads :"extract from a letter from the District Clerk, District Council of Mount Barker (Oct.17, 1941) ...the house...is now owned by Mr. HR Walsh of the Oriental Hotel, Adelaide, and is occupied by his son Mr J Walsh. The house in question is situated on part of section 4478, Hundred of Macclesfield, and is practically the same as the photograph, the only alterations being that a balcony has been placed around it, and the lower window on the left hand side of the photograph has been converted into a bay window".

The Friend's Meeting House at Mount Barker

The Friend's Meeting House at Mount Barker, commonly called 'Quakers' Chapel', built in 1854. Signed by the artist, bottom right hand corner. The artwork was sketched from a photograph, after being commissioned for use in 'Chronicle Cameos' published by Nadjuri Australia. Other works by Malcolm Bartsch are held in the University of South Australia Architecture Museum.

There are seven gentlemen and a young boy standing outside the building. The man wearing a top hat could be the proprietor himself, Mr Adam Watson Richardson, along with his staff, standing outside the premises. A sign on the side of the building is advertising: 'Horse & cattle medicine. Oils, paints & colours. Kerosine. Paperhangings. Books & stationery'.

View of Nixon's Mill, Windmill Hill, Mount Barker. The area developed as a milling centre in the 1840's. Frederick R Nixon's wind-powered mill was completed in 1842. This mill was located on the brow of a hill overlooking the road between Hahndorf and Mount Barker. Nixon's Millground over half a million bushels of wheat in one season. Milling ceased in 1864 as it could no longer compete with steam mills. Frederick Robert Nixon(1817-1860) was an artist, draughtsman and surveyor. He arrived in South Australia in 1838 to take up his appointment with Colonel William Light's team of surveyors. In 1839 he was in charge of one of the teams surveying 15,000 acres in the Mount Barker District
