Summary

Cabinet card photograph showing a view of the Mount Barker commercial premises of A.W. Richardson, 'Druggist and Bookseller', located in the Main Street (now Gawler Street), Mount Barker. There are seven gentlemen and a young boy standing outside the building. The man wearing a top hat could be the proprietor himself, Mr Adam Watson Richardson, along with his staff, standing outside the premises. A sign on the side of the building is advertising: 'Horse & cattle medicine. Oils, paints & colours. Kerosine. Paperhangings. Books & stationery'.

Historical information

Mr. A.W. (Adam Watson) Richardson was a prominent and highly respected citizen of Mount Barker, working for many years as a chemist and stationer, as well as a local agent for The Advertiser since 1837, a Justice of the Peace, and was connected with various local institutions. He died of bronchitis and pneumonia, aged 65, on 6 April 1894, leaving behind a widow and seven daughters and three sons. The chemist and stationery shop was built in approximately 1864, with the veranda added in the 1880s. The building is still standing in Mount Barker and is currently as delicatessen, located at 15 Gawler Street.
