St. John's Church, Laura
[General description] A clergyman stands by the gate of St. John's church. It is a stone building with brick quoins and a Norman style tower, partially obscured by gum trees. This postcard appears to have been the property of Mr. R.J. Rose who was the editor of the Laura Standard. For another view of the church, see SRG 94/10/29/252. North Laura Hotel
North Laura Hotel, Laura. During 1887-89 W Riddle was the proprietor of "The Top" Hotel as it sits at the north end of the town.


Methodist Church, Laura
The Methodist Church at Laura in the Mid North of South Australia, when the clergyman was Pastor CA Weckert. Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists bought the Methodist building and in 1909 built and dedicated a new church.

Public School, Laura
Laura Public School. The central figure is teacher Miss G.A.Cox who had already held school for two years in various buildings and had 100 scholars before the school was built in 1876.

Floods at Laura. The Pine River at Laura burst its banks and six people have been reported drowned. Sand bags saved the hospital, shops, hotels and many houses from devastation. The Becker farm near Laura straddled the Pine Creek about four kilometres north of Laura. "The Willows" stands on a bend on the creek and in the 1941 floods raging flood waters swept round and through the homestead.

Court House, Laura
The classically decorated Court House at Laura was built in 1878 and is typical of many free standing courthouses in country South Australia. It operated for 90 years until its closure in 1968.

[General description] Looking along the main street in Laura in the late eighteen seventies. Shops and business premises line the road which is unmade and unsealed with no footpaths. Some businesses have spread gravel in front of their premises to keep down dust and mud. On the left is the premises of J. Rock, Saddler, next along is C.A. Stark, Fruiterer, Greengrocer and Labour Office, then J. White, General Smith. [On back of photograph] Laura : 1877-78 / Presented by Mr. H.O. Sexton on condition that it be surrendered if demanded by the party from whom Mr. Sexton obtained it'.

[General description] The Laura Institute, partially obscured by trees. It is a two storey stone building with arched windows and entrance, built in 1875


Flour Mill, Laura
[General description] Flour mill, Laura, built in 1874 for HWA Walter. It burned down in 1878, was rebuilt and continued under the ownership of GE Walter who installed new machinery. The mill was an important part of Laura's history, employing many local people over the years. It ceased production in 1972 but continued to process flour for specialised markets.


Railway Station, Laura
[General description] Horse drawn vehicles wait in front of the Railway Station at Laura. The railway line extended from Gladstone to Laura in 1884, then on to Booleroo Centre in 1910, and finally to Wilmington in 1915. The line closed in 1969.
