A collection of studio portraits under the title 'South Australian Pioneers 1838', with 'T. Duryea, Adelaide, 1872' at the bottom. The mosaic includes a painting of the Old Gum Tree and a portrait of Governor Sir John Hindmarsh above 47 portraits, and the handwritten names of the colonists are listed under the ships they arrived in on both sides of the portraits.

This mosaic holds 581 portraits, and represents a combined group of those portraits Duryea depicted in separate mosaics featuring male colonists who arrived in South Australia as adults in 1836, 1837, 1838, 1839 and 1840. All but three of the portraits on B 47770 are also included in Duryea's largest mosaic at B 8235.

[General description] Entrance to Vaughan's Market, East Terrace, Rundle Street, Adelaide. Business names seen are Jones Draper, Smith, Hince, Lewis and Machin. This maket was established by Richard Vaughan in 1867. [General description] People in Edwardian dress stroll past, some pausing to look into the window of Crooks and Brooker's, ironmongers. The full range of their business is advertised on the side of the building, and includes all manner of household goods and farm supplies. They also supplied machinery for the copper mines in South Australia's mid-north. On the right is Birks & Company, the forerunner to David Jones. On the left is the doorway to Marshall's, with a gas light in front. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 44 / Rundle St., north side / 1909 / Extreme right of photo is 23 yards east of Stephens Pl. Near side of Goode, Toms' is 54 yards north of Rundle St.'

Rundle Street, north side. Charles Birks Department Store dominates the north side of Rundle Street. This three storey shop had an additional two storeys and a canopy over the entrance added on the western end in 1920. This store was merged with the Sydney store of David Jones in 1953.

[General description] Hindley Street with cars, pedestrians and shops. Three two storey buildings that feature in this view are premises for businesses, from left: Frith Jones, Tailor and Mercer, A. & A. Coles, Tobacconists and the Public Benefit Boot Company. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 76 / Hindley Street, south side / Sept. 21, 1927 / On the right is Leigh Street. Hindley Street frontage of the two story shops: 18 yards.' (Another hand) 'The three two storey shops were demolished in 1928. (See B 5931 and B 6063'. According to a researcher, at the right hand side is the W.T. Flint hardware store, which was in operation until approximately 1940s. The store used a aerial wired system to ransfer money from the counter staff to the cash controller staff.

[General description] The photographer has used the telegraph wires for an interesting effect in this scene of city street and buildings. The traffic is all horse drawn and prominent is the Kensington horse tram number 76 displaying a sign advertising Shierlaw's clothing and tailoring business. The Industrial Buildings is in the centre. Bertram & Cornish and H. Jones Photographers are on the corner of Hindley Street. On the far right the E.S.& A. Bank building can be seen. [On back of photograph] 'King William Street, west side.' (Another hand) 'Donated by Mrs. R.C. Edwardes, Glenunga.' Sweet Adelaide signature with inverted anchor symbol or 7. City Rubber Store stands to the south of the six storey Pharmacy Building which was erected in 1925.

Gawler Place, west side, 30th October 1952. The Churchill Building was remodelled in 1949. Near side is 49 yards north of Grenfell Street. Frontage: 26 1/2 yards. For view of the building before alterations see B4627. To the left of the Churchill Building stands Farren Price Watchmakers and Jewellers. North of this stands a mens shoe shop. On the northern side of the Churchill Building is AW Dobbie and Company and then comes Fletcher Jones clothing shop. Shoppers, bicycles and a car line the street

Grenfell Street, Adelaide, south side, looking from East terrace. The Woodman Hotel, [later to become the Producers], which existed on this site since 22nd March, 1939, is seen on the left. The licensee at this time is C.R. Jones. The tower from the Congregational Church on Hindmarsh Square can be seen faintly on the right in the distance. The road is muddy and wheel-rutted. Queen's Chambers, Pirie Street, south side. This building was constructed in 1869 as a suite of offices. The cantilevered balcony and arched windows on the ground and upper storeys create a charming streetscape.Next door stands the Pirie Street Methodist Church which opened in 1851 and demolished in 1972

Freemason's Tavern, Pirie Street, south side. The far side of the hotel is 64 yards east of Gawler Place. The frontage is 15 yards. The hotel existed since 1841 and at the time of this photograph the proprietor was Mrs L Murray. The hotel was known as the Freemansons Hotel from 1886. The owner appears to be WA Jones who, according to a banner on the hotel, was late of the Freemasons Tavern at Wilmington and Quorn.

Morphett Street, Adelaide, west side, on 9th April, 1925. An early utility vehicle is parked In front of Foggitt Jones. The left side of the two storey cottages is 41 yards north of Grote Street. Morphett Street, Adelaide, west side, on 4th June, 1925. On the left, a classic Adelaide villa is about to be demolished, and replaced by the building which can be seen at B 4054. The two storey house will be demolished in 1940. The site was then used as an open air show display for tiles. The point where the villa adjoins the shop on the left is 29 yards north of Grote Street. The point where houses adjoin Foggitt, Jones' premises is 53 yards north of Grote Street.
