Obviously they are the same building, except that some alterations were made after conversion to hotel and theatre. Cumming's site was sold in 1867, the purchasers converting it into a theatre and hotel - the theatre must have been added at the rear"

Theatre Royal, Hindley Street, north side, 31st August 1962. The Theatre was demolished in 1962. It was Adelaide's best known and much loved theatre. It was built in 1868, rebuilt in 1878 and served Adelaide for 84 years.

Ross George Samuel Fuller was the proprietor of the hotel at the time of this photograph. Also seen are E Martin's Tailor and Shirt Shop and Morris Cafe serving their speciality of fish and grills.

Premises of William Charles Rigby, 53 Hindley Street

Born in London in 1834 William Charles Rigby sailed a small boat, the 'Gem' from London to Melbourne in 1853 in order to reach the goldfields of Victoria. After six years he moved his family to Adelaide and in 1859 established his bookselling, stationery and publishing business in Hindley Street. An advertisement for the business may be found in the Register of 5 November 1868, pg 4. The business outgrew these premises and in 1877 he built the premises in King William St. William died aged 79 on 14 July 1913. An obituary is published in The Register of Tuesday 15 July 1913.

Premises of L. Conrad, Butcher, 79 Hindley Street

Leopold Conrad opened his business at 79 Hindley Street on 1st August 1863. Born 4 October 1839 in Hanover, Germany, Leopold arrived in South Australia in February 1858. The business operated from this address until 1886, by 1890 it had expanded to Rundle St., East End Market and Port Adelaide. He died at his East Terrace residence, Helstonleigh on 17 December 1918. The photograph depicts the Conrad family and shoppers outside the Butcher's shop. Carcases of meat are hanging outside the windows of the shop.
