House occupied by Robert Thomas, founder of the "Register', and his wife Mary, who came to South Australia on the Africaine in 1836. A woman's face is framed by an attic window of this early Adelaide cottage, which is covered with vines. The cottage, situated in Hindley Street, Adelaide is probably Rhantregwnwyn Cottage. The photo is very similar to one which appears in Mary Thomas' 'Diary and Letters', p. 134, and described on the same page.

Royal Oak Hotel, Hindley Street, north side, 21 December 1940. For alterations made in 1941 see B 10558. The left side of the Hotel abuts Fenn Place. The frontage of Hotel (ie. the balconied building, and the two storied bottle department adjoining) is 20 yards. The Royal Oak Hotel existed from 1838.

McGowan's Royal Oak Hotel, Hindley Street, north side, 29 August 1941, frontage of Hotel is 20 yards. This buildingwas remodelled in 1941. Compare with B 10404. For a view of the building on left of Royal Oak Hotel after alterations were completed in 1953 see B 12976. This hotel existed from 1838 and had several names - Royal Oak and Miner's Arms, Royal Oak and Miner's Home. At the time of this photograph Edward John McGowan was the proprietor.

[General description] This row of attached cottages probably dates from early twentieth century. They are of red brick and stucco with a Spanish Mission feel. The nearest cottage is named 'Riverton'. See B 14620 for photo of these cottages being demolished in December 1962. [On back of photograph] 'Acres 62,61 / Hindley Street, north side / Probably in the nineteen twenties / The near side of the cottages is 39.5 yards east of West Terrace and frontage is 67 yards'.
