[General description] A man and some children pose for the photographer outside this dilapidated building, probably once the premises of the Albion Hotel, which appears to be in the first stages of demolition. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 70 / Morphett Street, west side / 1910-19. / The far side of the City Produce Co.'s building is 57 yards south of Hindley Street. Near side of building * on the corner is 38.5 yards south of Hindley Street. *The Albion Hotel (see list of licences 1839-40) is said to have occupied this site.' (Another hand) 'Correct. See Duryea Panorama' (Another hand) 'Copied from a photo. in the possession of the S.A. Branch of the Royal Geographical Society'. A hard copy version of the photo has the inscription 'The building in the corner was one of the first hotels built in Adelaide and called the Albion Hotel. Kept by Jack Heed and old sport. The building with City Produce Co was built some years later and was used as a dancing hall. J. Lewis.'

The extreme right is 38 yards east of King William St.' (Another hand) 'Neg. available 1968' [General description] On a busy day in Rundle Street people stroll along the pavement and across the road amongst the slow moving traffic, both motor and horse-drawn. City buildings and shops are seen on either side of the street. Shown on the North side of the street are The C.J. Young Shoe Co., Barlow's Shoes, a chemist, Stevenson's Jewellers clock and Marshall's Dept Store. Shown on the South side are Thelma-Duryea Photographic Studio, Bricknell's Cafe, the Grand Theatre, Sigalas & Co., Cawthorne's Piano & Music Warehouse, Kindermann's Cafe (est.1851), Charlick Bros Grocers & Teamen, and De-Lany's Red Lion Hotel. Three motor vehicle registrations are visible: 06034 is a Lagonda 11 registered in September 1915 to Mr. E.K. Collins of Mount Bryan, 04016 is a Buick registered to W.D. Taylor of Brougham place, North Adelaide, and 2509 was registered in 1912 to A. Addicoat of Adelaide. A young girl in the centre foreground is carrying a small Australian flag.

Rundle Street looking East from about the premises of Hammer & Co., photographers at No.6. On the North side can be seen the signs of the Goldsmiths and Opticians Alliance, A.W.Barlow & Co. (boot importers) and J.E. Coudrey (Homeopathic and Dispensing Chemist). On the South Side are Heyne, Potter & Co., (Seedsmen), the Anglo-American Candy Factory, States Supply Stores, London Tailoring Depot, Bricknell's Cafe (scene of the first meeting of the 'Women's Non-Party Political Association' on the 19th July 1909), Woodman's Piano Warehouse and Townsend Duryea (Photographer). Two copies - slightly differing in size.

Currie St., South corner of King William St. about 1869. Photograph shows the Jaffery Building on the corner. There are ramps over the gutter and the streets look very muddy. A horse and cart travel along King William Street.

The upper floor of the building on the extreme right was used earlier, in 1855, as a studio by Townsend Duryea. A horse cab is standing at the kerb on the left.

Grenfell Street south side, looking east. The building on the corner (number 66) has the name CH Manning carved into stone under a large Coat and Arms on the first storey. Shop fronts visible include a photgraphic studio, Bankside Wine Bar selling Hardy's claret punch. The late T Duryea photographic studio was established in 1854 and holds a dominant position on the first floor of the corner building. Horses, carriages and customers can be seen in the street.

Pirie Street, Adelaide, north side, looking at the east side of Freeman Street (now Gawler Place, 1925). Two men with a hand barrow, and some youths, are posing outside a row of cottages. The end cottage appears to be a corner shop. Note the gas lamp on the street corner. After 1870; compare the corregated iron roof with the one shown in Duryea's 1870 Panorama. Before 1880; compare vacant allotment with the Cadastral Survey Plan.

Gawler Place, Adelaide, east side, close to Pirie Street, featuring cottages with mullion windows. The galvanised iron roofs show that the date is after 1870. (Compare with Duryea's 1870 panorama.) This view was taken before the erection of the Onslow buildings on the corner of Pirie Street and Gawler Place. See B 2478 for one of the buildings, soon after completion. The window of the cottage contains a sign which states: 'Straw, Tuscan, Leghorn: Hats and Bonnets cleaned and altered'. For dating, see directories from 1860-1862. Two three storey buildings stand out among the single storey buildings which include a provisions store, two hotels, and a warehouse. A building covered in scaffolding on the extreme left of the photograph can be seen. Horses and carriages stand waiting in King William Street.

[General description] A crowd lines the footpath and centre of King William Street, some perching on top of the W. Puplett & Co. building to catch a glimpse of the Duke of Edinburgh. The street has been decorated with flags and bunting for the occasion. W. Puplett started trading in these premises mid 1867. [On back of photograph] 'Acres 140 and 171 / King William Street, west side / Duke of Edinburgh's visit / presented by Miss H.M. Dorman'.

Town Hall, King William Street, Adelaide, soon after its completion. Designed by Edmund W. Wright, its foundation stone was laid on the 4th May, 1863. The building was completed in 1866. The Advertiser Building, on the opposite side of King William Street, was completed in 1869. (See Duryea's panorama.) This is a copy; for the original photo see B 2835.

Panoramic view of Adelaide, looking east from the Government Offices. In the centre of the view is the Flinders Street Presbyterian Church. King William Street, looking south from North Terrace. This photograph shows the view from the intersection of King William Street and North Terrace. The road appears to be very wide and the buildings on the eastern corner include Academy on the corner, Civil and Military Engineering Institute, Adelaide Gymasium, Hunt's Original and a large grocery store with several people waiting outside. The Town Hall clock tower can be seen in the distance minus it's clock. Apparently the intended clock was given to Trinity Church instead. Various shops and businesses line the western side of King William Street. Horses and carriages wait at the side of the street.

Duncan & Fraser's premises on Franklin Street, Adelaide, north side, west of Bentham Street. It is probably later than 1865 as in Duryea's 1865 Panorama, Duncan and Fraser have a building next to the New Connection Methodist Church. B 14103 has a collection of photos of many different styles of their horse drawn vehicles, from one of their catalogues.

Franklin Street, south side. The Flagstaff Hotel stood on the east corner of Franklin Street and Trennery Court. The far side of the two storey buildings on the left stood on the west corner of Franklin and Morney Streets. The Flagstaff Hotel was originally situated further west from the position shown in the photograph. CH Sayer was proprietor from 1859-1872. The steeple of the Maughan Bible Christian Church can be seen further along Franklin Street looking towards the hills. The Methodist New Connexion Church church was built in 1864. This photograph was taken between 1867-71.

Stow Memorial Church, Flinders

Stow Memorial Church in Flinders Street was dedicated in 1865. This church backed on to the Wesleyan Chapel in Pirie Street. They were seperated by a high stone wall with a locked gate. A medieval gargoyle squirrel was introduced into the design of the church by the architect who had brought a pet squirrel with him from England . The church is built of Glen Osmond stone finished with cut freestone from Glen Ewin.
