Duryea's Adelaide Album 3

An album compiled by Adelaide photographer, Townsend Duryea, with the title 'Duryea's Adelaide Album' embossed on the front cover. The first 'page' is a panorama of Adelaide, comprising five roughly uniform panels, mounted on linen to form a continuous image 12.5 x 89.5 mm (the linen measures 248 x 940 mm, and folds into three equal sections to fit into the album). The other photographs in the album show Rundles, Hindley and Wakefield Streets, North Terrace and the Botanic Gardens. Inside the front cover is a small photographic portrait of a man, believed to be Duryea.

The first 'page' is a panorama of Adelaide, comprising five roughly uniform panels, mounted on linen to form a continuous image 125 x 895 mm (the linen measures 248 x 940 mm, and folds into three equal sections to fit into the album). The other photographs in the album mostly relate to the visit of Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh, to Adelaide. See B 73122/1 to B 73122/14 for details on individual photographs.

An album compiled by Adelaide photographer, Townsend Duryea, with the title 'Duryea's Adelaide Album' embossed on the front cover. The first 'page' is a panorama of Adelaide, comprising five roughly uniform panels, mounted on linen to form a continuous image 12.5 x 89.5 mm (the linen measures 248 x 940 mm, and folds into three equal sections to fit into the album). The other photographs in the album show King William Street, Victoria Square, the Torrens River and Botanic Gardens. A book plate at the front indicates that it was originally owned by Edward Angas Johnson.

Townsend Duryea

Townsend Duryea, born in New York, he arrived in South Australia in 1855. Duryea operated a successful photographic business until 1875 when it was destroyed in a fire. He died in N.S.W.

Duryea Gallery, Grenfell Street

Photographic Gallery of Townsend Duryea, south east corner of Grenfell Street and King William Street. This building was destroyed by fire on 18 April 1875. Townsend Duryea was an American daguerreotypist who opended this studio in Adelaide in 1855. The ground floor of this building at number 66 houses the drapery business of J Whiting.

The photographic composite (mosaic) B 8235/1 holds 708 portraits. A further 27 in the upper left section are missing due to damage. (An unnamed portrait has been placed in the gap at B 8235 23E, instead of the portrait of John Moore missing due to damage .) A newspaper article that refers to the donation of the mosaic to the Public Library of South Australia in 1894 by Mr CH Hussey of Port Elliot states that it was damaged when Duryea's studio was destroyed by fire on 18 April 1875. (The Advertiser, 17 November 1910.) Mr Hussey's portrait is at B 8235/1 1A.

The panorama consists of ten of Duryea's original photographic prints pasted in sequence onto board, starting with a scene looking north down King William Street, then turning round in a clockwise direction; these may be viewed online by doing a number search on B 16004/1 to B 16004/10.

William Giles

William Giles, Company Manager and Member of Upper House, seat of Yatala. George Angas Fife invited him to take charge of the South Australian Company Station on Kangaroo Island. He took up the position of Colonial Manager and later moved to Adelaide where he set the agricultural future of the state. He improved the wool clip, flour exports, copper mining, harvesting. He was patriarch of 21 children and 78 grandchildren.

The 1839 mosaic includes portraits of Governor Sir John Hindmarsh and Governor George Gawler above 224 portraits, and the handwritten names of the colonists are listed under the ships they arrived in on both sides of and below the portraits. The mosaic, which is mounted on fabric, is in very poor condition. The graphic copy, made in 1962, may be viewed in the reading room.

This mosaic holds 581 portraits, and represents a combined group of those portraits Duryea depicted in separate mosaics featuring male colonists who arrived in South Australia as adults in 1836, 1837, 1838, 1839 and 1840. All but three of the portraits on B 47770 are also included in Duryea's largest mosaic at B 8235.

The photographic studio of Townsend Duryea located on the south corner of Grenfell Street and King William Street, Adelaide. There is an advertisement for "Life Size Sennotypes" that Duryea began advertising in 1865. The building along with most of Duryea's photographic collection was destroyed by fire on 18 April 1875.

Photographic copy of B 8235/1, mounted on card , containing 734 portraits and handwritten alphanumeric coordinates. This print represents the original mosaic (B 8235/1) before it was damaged by fire and lost 27 portraits. It would have been one of the smaller versions of the original mosaic that Duryea made available for sale. It was purchased by the South Australian Archives from the Old Curiosity Shop, Rundle Street, Adelaide in 1939.

Portrait of a young woman, with the inscription 'To Mabel, with love from Thelma, 1922' on the back. Also pencilled on the reverse is 'Thelma-Duryea', which was a photographic studio operating in Adelaide in the early 20th century. 'Mabel', to whom the photo was gifted, was Mabel Dawn Waters, nee Lovering, born 10 July 1881 at Kapunda, SA; died 10 May 1948 at Bassendean, WA.

Carriage and outriders

An open carriage with four horses harnessed to it, with two men in top hats on the driver's seat and another up behind; and an additional four men mounted on horses (two in front, two behind). It is assumed this is the carriage and escort provided for the Duke of Edinburgh during his visit. A number of militia men can be seen standing beyond the carriage. This image occupies just over half of the print, with the remaining (bottom) part showing an out of focus hill. There is also a curious 'wheel' which appears to be in mid air behind the assemblage.
