Residence, Marble Hill

Residence, Marble Hill

[General description] Marble Hill, summer retreat for South Australia's governors. It was designed by Colonial Architect William McMInn in the 'Scottish baronial revival' style and built (c. 1879) from local sandstone with a roof of welsh slate. It was burnt down in bushfires of 1955 and remained a ruin for many years. In 2017 reconstruction is under way.

Institute, Melrose which was erected in 1873, demolished and rebuilt in 1907, extended in 1926. The foundation stone was laid by Robert Melrose of Rosebank in 1891. The building was also used as a school, church and the District Council Chambers. A poster for a new film called "High Society Blues" can be seen. Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell star in the film about a new country family who come to live among established wealthy neighbours.

Middle Bank Lightship was located 20 miles west off Port Broughton. Passing ships Captains paid a levy for the lightship to warn of the extensive shoals and shallow water.The lightship was put into service in January 1896

[General description] Middle Bank Lightship, 1907-12. Her light was first displayed on Middle Bank on 15th January 1896. The vessel was built at Port Adelaide in the 1850s and had already served as a lightship at Semaphore, Tipara, Port Germain and Port Pirie before being renovated for this placement at Middle Bank in the Spencer Gulf where many groundings of ships had taken place.

[[General description] Middle Bank Beacon, located in Spencer Gulf. The light was first shown in January 1896.
