Frenchman's Rock, Hog Bay

Protective structure over the memorial rock at Frenchman's Bay, Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island. The rock was inscribed by the crew of Nicolas Baudin's ship Le Geographe in 1803. He stopped at this spot to collect fresh water and meat. The crew stayed for three weeks mapping the island and collecting flora and fauna specimens.

Mr. C. F. Newman's Nursery. In 1856 CF Newman and his young bride cleared land in the District of Highercomb to establish a nursery. By 1880 the nursery was a show piece of the colony listing 300 orchid varieties, 600 rose varieties and 300 different fruit trees. Today the ruins of Newmans Nursery show the location of heated glass houses and later the land was devastated by floods, bushfires, used as a dairy farm and for sheep grazing. The present day nursery on North East Road was established in 1925.

[General description] A small group of people (and a dog) stand at the base of the Cape Jervis Lighthouse. It was first lit on 10th August, 1871. In 1972 this tower was replaced, standing next to the foundation of the old one. It is a twin of the lighthouse at Robe.

[General description] Prince of Wales Hotel, Kapunda, established in 1858, listed National Trust (file number 2153). It is a two storey building with wide verandahs and a billboard in front advertising the Olympic Star Picture Company's film Enoch Arden which was doing the rounds in the mid-north in 1911. The licensee at the time this photograph was taken is John Kearne.

[General description] This newly renovated two storey building was acquired for theSavings Bank of S.A. in 1909. It was previously the premises of the E.,S.,& A. Bank. Abutting the building is E. Thomas, Tobacconist with advertisements in its windows for American Eagle Twist and Yankee Doodle Plug tobacco. A large telegraph pole stands in front of the building.

[General description] Entrance to Dutton Park, Kapunda. The park was established in 1877 named after Frederick Hansborough Dutton, pastoralist, owner of Anlaby Station. He contributed genourously to the funding of the park.

[General description] Bank of Adelaide, Kapunda. Built of sandstone and bluestone in 1866, architects were Edmund Wright and Wood. It was the Bank of Adelaide's oldest branch office.

[General description] Kapunda Institute, opened July 1871, architect was D. Garlick, contractors were Messrs. Manson & Hitt. Only the front section of the building was completed then, the rear hall was added in 1874.

Kapunda township. A prominent building in the photograph houses AF Mayger Baker and Caterer. Wagons and carriages can be seen in the street. "The main street from the railway station to the north of the Victoria township is one continuous double line of substantial and commodious places of business" Kapunda Herald, 6 January 1865. The National Bank built in 1862 is an imposing two storey Georgian building

Kapunda township looking down the main street to Christ Church Anglican Church in the distance. The church was established in 1888. The hotel is on the left corner and a wagon loaded with wool bales is on the right of the photograph. The hotel is possibly the Sir John Franklin situated on Main Street which was the leading hotel in the early days. A researcher has provided the following information: 'The hotel was then known as Crase's Hotel and is now known as the North Kapunda Hotel. The street where the church can be seen at the end is known as Crase Street'.

Kapunda School existed from 1907. In 1922 The school transferred to a new stone building which was officially opened by Sidney Kidman on October 12, 1922. Sir Sidney gifted his home, Eringa, to the Education Department to be used as the administration building for Kapunda High School
