Historical information

(Godson number M.1). According to researcher Leith Hall, the vessel on the left hand side is the PS Ruby built in 1876. Of the 260-280 paddle steamers once used on the Murray Darling, the PS Ruby was one of the most heavily altered of all. The vessel may have never been lengthened, but her superstructure underwent many major changes, with probably as many as six different configurations during the course of her 32 years as a Paddle Steamer. It is likely the image is slightly earlier than 1890, as the PS Ruby was supposed to have been converted into a triple decked Passenger Steamer around that time.
