Summary

[General description] This view is looking through the front gates and along the drive where a young man in uniform stands holding a horse. The house is mostly obscured by trees which are part of a large garden. [On back of photograph] 'St. Catharines, Prospect Road, Prospect / Probably late 1890s / House situated on the east side of Prospect Road between Highbury Street and Te Anau Avenue / (Section 348).

Historical information

St Catharine's Prospect was built for James Angas Johnson (1841-1909) who lived there with his wife Catharine (nee Williams) and their children: John Frederick, Rose Maybel, Catharine Amy, Edward Angas and James Howard, who was born there on 23/12/1875 and married Vanetta Evelyn Rogers there on 29/9/1904. Their son, James Lisle Johnson, was also born at St Catharine's on 22/8/1905. James Angas Johnson was the eldest son of James and Rosetta (Angas) Johnson and the eldest grandson of George Fife Angas. His father died on the way out to Australia on board the 'Africaine' in 1847 and his mother, Rosetta, later married the Reverend Hannay and lived with him at Rose Villa in Angaston. The house and land are now owned by Black Friars School. [Information provided by C. Taylor.].
