Gillen
[General description] Peaceful scene of the River Murray showing the river with eucalyps growing down to the banks. One of the locations in the village settlement scheme, Gillen was established on 13 April 1894. It folded two years later, the first to do so due to two factors: the settlement and its pumping plant were situated on a high cliff - a position from which the pump could not draw water efficiently, and the area had poor soils unsuitable for cropping. [On back of photograph] 'River frontage to Gillen, River Murray Village Settlement / 189-'.

Gillen
River Murray from the cliffs near Gillen settlement. This was one of thirteen communal settlements known as village settlements. They were created to ease the economic depression following the major strikes in the 1890's and the bank crash of 1893. Socialist ideas became popular and utopian schemes were appealing to the unemployed and those struggling to make ends meet. Gillen's pumping plant was located on a high cliff which meant the pump could not draw water efficiently. It was the first settlement to fold.

Glen Osmond
[General description] Surrounded by gum trees, this round tower is two storeys tall and is constructed of stone with brick quoins around its door and windows, which appear to be of the sash type. Around the top of the tower a crennulated effect has been created using decorative brickwork. Low stone buildings can be seen in the background. [On back of photograph] 'Reproduced in the Mail, Sep. 4, 1926 / Observation tower situated in the grounds of Birksgate, Glen Osmond. It was the usual means of notifying neighbours, diggers etc. that a mail steamer was approaching. Built about 1860 by Sir Thomas Elder. About 45ft high. On top was a cannon and a flagpole used by Sir Thomas Elder for signalling. Disused for this purpose by 1890 or perhaps sooner. (Above information taken from the Mail* but the signalling part is largely discredited by Mr. A.T. Saunders). *For this cutting, see Newspaper Cuttings, Vol. 2, p. 100'.
