Summary

[General description] Peaceful scene of the River Murray showing the river with eucalyps growing down to the banks. One of the locations in the village settlement scheme, Gillen was established on 13 April 1894. It folded two years later, the first to do so due to two factors: the settlement and its pumping plant were situated on a high cliff - a position from which the pump could not draw water efficiently, and the area had poor soils unsuitable for cropping. [On back of photograph] 'River frontage to Gillen, River Murray Village Settlement / 189-'.
