Historical information

Robert Innes Ker, son of William Innes Ker, was born in Port Pirie, South Australia, in approximately 1895. He had one older brother, William Innes Ker, born approximately 1891. After their father William died at his home in Port Pirie on 19 December 1899, aged 32, Robert and William lived with relatives at Burta Station and Broken Hill, in New South Wales. William and Robert enlisted with the AIF and served overseas during the First World War. Both survived and returned to Australia. Robert married Dorothy Muriel Elliott in 1925, and they had three children: Alva Innes (1927-1993), Byron Innes (1928-), and Colleen Innes (1934-). They lived in Barmera, Berri, and Adelaide, and Robert worked on irrigation blocks.Byron joined the Royal Australian Navy and served as Leading Radio Electrical Mechanic on board the HMAS Tobruk during the Korean War. William married Evelyn Mary in New South Wales, and also had three children: Robert Innes Ker (1928-1949), Barry, and Jill [author Jill Ker Conway] (1934-). William and his family lived on a sheep station at Coorain, on the Western plains of New South Wales. William died of accidental drowining in New South Wales in 1944.

SRG 435/81/1: Parade of sailors, possibly at the HMAS Cerberus naval training base in Victoria. Byron Innes Ker was an electrical mechanic in the RAN and may be one of the sailors on parade.
SRG 435/81/12: Group portrait of a football team of young men. Their team guernsey has a 'V' on the front. One of the team is possibly Byron Innes Ker.

SRG 435/81/71: Portrait of No.4 Sergeant Walwin Harold Wilke, 3rd Light Horse Regiment, Headquarters, wearing uniform and slouch hat. Sergeant Wilke was married to Gertrude Eugene Wilke and worked as a civil servent in Adelaide before enlisting on 19 August 1914, aged 32. He had previously served as a corporal, No.380 with the 5th South Australian Imperial Bushmen during the Boer War. He served with the 3rd Light Horse Regiment, Headquarters, and embarked from Adelaide on board the A17 'Port Lincoln' on 20 October 1914. Written on back: 'Your sincere pal W Harold Wilke'.
SRG 435/81/73: Four men and a boy posing by a car. Two of the men are holding guns and the man in the centre is holding a dead kangaroo. The bodies of a number of other kangaroos have been laid over the bonnet of the car.
SRG 435/81/81: Group of five men in the bush, sitting in the shade under a tree. The man in the centre is thought to be Robert Innes Ker, and one of the other men may be his older brother William.
