Historical information

No. 6081 Private John Reginald Marks, born in Birmingham, England, son of Harriet Marks, worked as a porter in Norwood before he enlisted with the AIF on 14 June 1916, aged 18. He served with the 10th Battalion, 19th Reinforcement and embarked with his unit from Adelaide on board the HMAT A70 'Ballarat' on 12 August 1916. He served in France and was awarded the Military Medal in April 1917 for redering 'valuable service by carrying important messages under most trying and dangerous circumstances as a Company Runner. He displayed great bravery and devotion to duty throughout this period'. He returned to Australia in December 1917. He died on 30 September 1976.
