Historical information

No. 26101 Gunner Frederick John Ernest Mitchell, son of Frederick George and Emily Mitchell, born in 1892 in the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia, worked as a labourer before he enlisted with the AIF on 22 January 1916, aged 23, and served with Field Artillery Brigade 15, Reinforcement 4, departing with his unit from Melbourne on board the HMAT A67 'Orsova' on 1 August 1916. He transfered to the 3rd Mechanical Transport Company and served on the Western Front in France. He died of disease on 5 June 1918, and was buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey, England.
