Street scene. According to a researcher, this view is of the terminus of the Glen Osmond horse tram line, operated by the Parkside Tramway Company (see inscription on the rocker panel of the tramcar), and looks into the front gate of Birksgate, sometime home of Sir Thomas Elder and later his nephew Tom Elder Barr Smith and in turn, his son, Sir Tom Barr-Smith. The "Big Gum Tree" is on the left, though it was demolished in road-widening in the 1970s amid some controversy. The horse tram line was extended to Glen Osmond in March 1884, and the condition of the tram and its lack of a top-cover suggests the picture was taken soon afterwards.
