Group of people standing with an early model motor car. The person in the background behind the second seated woman is Evan Kyffin Thomas. A picture in the Critic on 6 September 1905 confirms this. A man in the background is Carl Wittber, who imported the De Dion motor vehicle in 1905. A second article confirms that C.W. Wittber owned a De Dion in that year and was racing it in time trials.

Summary

Glass plates negatives of Adelaide, metropolitan and country views, including buildings and interiors, domestic scenes, and portraits and family groups, by William S. Smith. Some of the images relate to interior scenes of the former South Australian Hotel on North Terrace (see note re Advertiser article in 1984). General notes

See 'The Advertiser' Friday April 13, 1984 for leading article, page 1: 'Ghosts of old Adelaide are coming to life' relating to $56,000 conservation project at the SA Archives in 1984, with the restoration work including the collection of William S. Smith. A copy has been placed in Album 1

Historical information

William Sidney Smith was a freelance photographer and fancy goods dealer who worked for the Register newspaper from 1900 to 1927. From 1901-1904 he is listed with premises at 12 Arcade, Rundle Street, from 1905-1907 at 154 Rundle Street, 1908-1910 at 13 Pulteney Street and from 1911-1914 and onwards at 293 Pirie Street. He was a resident of Port Noarlunga when he died in Adelaide on 11 June 1960 at the age of 96 years. (Details from R.J. Noye's Dictionary of South Australian Photography 1845-1915) He originally came from Canada in 1886 and set up a studio in Sydney before coming to Adelaide in 1900. Smith was born in 1864.
