Owners: JP Kidston, registered Glasgow, later Glasgow Shipping Co. (Aitken and Lilburn, managers) registered Glasgow. Sold Nov. 1909 Huddart, Parker Ltd, Registered Port Adelaide and Converted into coal hulk. Register closed in 1958 when advice received vessel broken up].

The iron ship 'Loch Vennachar', 1557 tons, in an unidentified port [iron ship, 1557 tons, ON71748, 250.1 x 38.3 x 22.4. Built 1875 (8) J&G Thomson, Glasgow. Owners: Glasgow Shipping Co. (Aitken, Lilburn and Co., managers) registered Glasgow. Wrecked Kangaroo Island in September 1905. The remains of her hull have been examined by skindivers (1977) all hands were lost. She was not seen again after speaking to SS 'Yongala' Sept. 6, 1905, about 150 miles from Kangaroo Island].

Joseph Conrad is reputed to have served as an officer in this ship. The claim is sometimes disputed].

Registered Liverpool. Abandoned in position 35.37S x 19.2E. 4th October 1899 on a voyage from Middlesbro' towards Calcutta with salt].


The 'Knight of the Thistle' in an unidentified harbour
The iron ship 'Knight of the Thisle', 1428 tons, in an unidentified harbour [possibly the former 'Don Diego'] [possible also known as 'Hoppet'] [iron ship 1489 tons, ON78782, 232.6 x 37.9 x 22.7. Built 1878 (4) T Royden and Son, Liverpool; Greenshields, Cowie and Co., registered Liverpool c.1897 sold foreign and renamed 'Hoppet' and later 'Novo' under the flag of Norway. In 1914 put into the River Plate, damaged and was condemned. During wartime shortages she was recommissioned and renamed 'Don Diego' and was broken up in 1928 when under the flag of Uruguay].

The iron ship 'Lancaster Castle', 2155 tons, in an unidentified port [iron ship, 2155 tons, ON91170, 278.8 x 40.4 x 24.4. Built 1884 (10) R Williamson and Son. Workington, Owners: Lancaster Castle Ship Co. Ltd. (J Chambers and Co.) registered Liverpool. c.1901 sold to German owners and renamed 'Margretha'. Run down and sunk by the steamer 'Mascot' of Rotterdam, in the North Sea in March 1909].

Owners Thomson, Dickie and Co (Sailing Ship Craigmore Ltd) registered Glasgow became the German owned Marie apparently broken up early 1920s but exact fate unknown].

(J&R Young managers) Often Young was shown as owner although they apparently continued to use Robertson and Cruickshank for years as the official owner) registered Liverpool. Sold c.1917 to Norway and renamed Saga].

Owners Eyre Evans and Co. registered Liverpool. Later Romeo Shipping Co. Ltd (T. Rome, manager) c. 1909 sold Norway and renamed 'Songvaar' and as such wrecked at Port Victoria, South Australia April 14 1912.]

The iron ship 'Kelat', 1894 tons, in an unidentified harbour [see 'Hovding'] [iron ship, 1894 tons, ON84103, 261.0 x 41.0 x 23.5. Built 1881 (3) Richardson, Duck and Co. Stockton on Tees, Owners: Ed. Bates and Sons, registered Liverpool. Sold in 1904 and renamed 'Hovding' by Norwegian owners. Dismasted off the coast of NSW c.1914 and not considered worth repairing. Acquired by McIlwraith, McEacharn and Co., and converted into a coal hulk and subsequently stationed at Albany WA. In WW2 was taken over by RAN for use as a storeship and was converted at Fremantle in 1941, then towed to Darwin by the tug 'Uco' in November 1941. Bombed and sunk by the Japanese during the air raid of 19 February 1942. Hull subsquently salvaged by Japanese scrap merchants and cut up and taken to Japan].

The steel ship 'Kynance', 1964 tons, in dock in Antwerp [steel ship, 1964 tons, ON105562, 265.5 x 40.0 x 23.5. Built 1895 (11) A Rodger and Co., Port Glasgow. Owners: Sailing Ship Kynance Co. Ltd. Lang and Fulton, later managed by C.G. Cowan and Co. Registered Greenock. When in ballast on a passage from Valparaiso to Iquique she drifted ashore in a calm on July 29, 1910 at Punta Blanca. all saved].

The steel ship 'Pass of Balmaha', 1571 tons, in an unidentified harbour [steel ship, 1571 tons, ON95087, 245.5 x 38.8 x 22.5. Built 1888 (8) R Duncan and Co., Port Glasgow. Owners: Gibson and Clark, registered Glasgow. During WW1 was captured and taken to Germany and refitted as a commerce raider and named 'Seeadler' under the command of von Luckner and sank a number of ships before being wrecked in August 1917 in the Society group. Owners: W Lowden and Co., registered Liverpool, sold c.1904/5 to Norwegians and now described as 4 mast barque and c.1911 passed to Uruguay and was broken up in Italy in 1922].
