Summary

Photograph of the concept design, captioned 'Accepted Design', for the statue of King Edward the Seventh and its female figures by Bertram Mackennal. This clay model version of the King's statue was not adopted in its final form, however. In this version the figure of the King is without its crown, a different and plainer sceptre is used, and the figure is wearing trousers instead of court ceremonial dress.

General notes

This is one of a series of photographs collected by A.E.H. Evans (1871-1950) Adelaide accountant, auditor and secretary during the time he was organising secretary of the King Edward VII Memorial Committee. Photographs already in the collection (B22247-22252) were donated by his company in 1971.

Historical information

The King Edward VII memorial statue was sculpted by Bertram Mackennal, A.R.A., M.V.O., in England and practically completed when World War One intervened. A public subscription was raised for the bronze sculptures of the King, the female figures and granite pedestal.
