Mareeba Hospital, Woodville Park

Nurses, with their small charges, pose for the photographer on the balcony of Mareeba Hospital, Woodville Park, in October 1921. Previously, it had been a convalescent hospital for soldiers, but in August, 1917, it formally became the Mareeba Babies Hospital. Used as a part-time training hospital for nurses, it was extended during the 1920s to accommodate up to 70 babies, including some rooms for mothers.

Mareeba Babies Hospital, Woodville as Red Cross Hospital No. 1 from 1914-18. A crowd has assembled as dignitaries arrive in an open car. Dr. Helen Mayo founded this independent hospital in 1913 but it was taken over by the government during WW1 as a Military Hospital, resuming as a babies' hospital after the war.
