Liberal Union Building in the course of construction on North Terrace. The construction of the building was started in the first half of 1924. Scaffolding is visible on the top two storeys of the building. Cars of the era are parked on both sides of North Terrace facing west. Plane trees and palms are growing along the footpath. The photograph was reproduced in the Chronicle on 24th May 1924. Left side of the building is 17 yards west of Stephens Place; frontage: 19 yards. [General description] This new four storey brick building is next door to a large iron structure, once Parry's Feed Merchants and livery stables, probably now used for the motor trade. There is a Shell bowser at its doorway. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 90 / Union Street, west side / February 8th 1938 / The four storey building was erected in 1937 on a site previously occupied by nondescrupt buildings / The right side of the four storey building is 20 yards south of Rundle Street / frontage is 11 yards'.

[General description] The well known and respected Richard Spencer Carriage and Waggon Manufacturing Company, established in 1866 by Richard Spencer, a native of Lancashire who arrived in South Australia in the 'Adamant' in 1863. Two horse drawn vehicles stand in front of these premises which are an extensive complex of stone and corrugated iron buildings. The motorbike in the foreground heralds the motor transport of the future. Pirie Street, Adelaide, south side, west of Gawler Place, showing the Woman's Christian Temperance Union building. The South Australian branch of the W.C.T.U. was founded in 1889, so this building has been recently completed. Its appearance was unchanged until 1925 when it was demolished. See B 4716 for a view of the new building. The near side of the building is 32 yards west of Gawler Place and its frontage is 22 yards.

[General description] This is a two storey building with shuttered windows and a portico with square pillars. A Norfolk Island pine tree looks to be outgrowing its position in front of the building. A large lantern hangs from an archway over the front gate where some gentlemen wearing top hats (bank managers?) are posing for the camera. The first branch of this bank was established in South Australia in 1850. The left side of the three storey building on the right is 71 yards south of Waymouth Street. The right side is 50 and a half yards south of Waymouth Street. Union Street, west side, 25 January 1929, near side of buildings is 57.5 yards north of Pennington Terrace and frontage is 7.5 yards. The buildings in the centre foreground were erected in 1928 on the northern portion of the block of land occupied by the house shown in B 5134 and B 5135. For view of cottage formerly on the site see B 2554. The building is surrounded by a high rendered wall with a heavy wooden gate.

Union Street, North Adelaide, east side, February 12th 1935, frontage of centre cottage is 7 yards. The little cottage in the centre stands on the South West corner of the Acre, its far side being 70 yards from Pennington Terrace. The cottage was demolished in 1935. See B 6804.
