Signed tablecloth belonging to Ada Ekers

Signed tablecloth belonging to Ada Ekers

Digital photograph of a signed tablecloth, identified in the centre as 'December - Mt Barker - 1902'. The table cloth is linen, and signatures are written in indelible pencil and then embroidered with various stiches in red perle cotton; scalloped edge finished with close red button-hole stitch. There is some deterioration with age but all signatures are still intact. The tablecloth is believed to have been started by Elizabeth Cornelius (nee Walker), who then passed it to her daughter, Ada Ekers (nee Walker). The tablecloth was used to record the signatures of visitors to the Cornelius and Ekers houses, and includes many members of both families, as well as friends. Ada's signature 'Ada G. Ekers', is just below the centre. After Ada died in 1938, the tablecloth was inherited by her son Laurie Ekers and daughter-in-law Elsie Ekers (nee Plaisted), who continued to tradition of the tablecloth until it was full, in the mid 1940s. [Adapted from 'The Signed Tablecloth (1902-1940)' by Ron Ekers].
