River steamer 'The Sturt'

River steamer "The Sturt", built at Port Sturt. She was built in 1856 and was the sister vessel to "Leichardt". She was stuck in the Darling River from 1885-1886. She hit a snag and sank in 1890.

Captain Charles Sturt

Captain Charles Sturt, born India and joined the British Army, he arrived in Australia in 1827. Australian explorer, in 1830 he discovered and named the Murray River, an event that gave new impetus to the settlement of South Australia. In 1838 he brought cattle overland to Adelaide from Sydney, after which Governor Gawler appointed him South Australian Surveyor-General and Registrar-General. Sturt later undertook additional expeditions into central Australia, but his health failed and he returned to England in 1851.

Methodist Church working party on Arbor Day, where the adjoing cemetery (God's Little Acre) was tidied up and beautified. The woman in the front row was Mrs. Bessie Moore, the head teacher at the nearby Upper Sturt Primary School. Mrs. Moore had previously conducted Arbor Day activities at the school and when that work was completed turned her attention to the local church and cemetery. The building in the background is the stables [information provided by a researcher].

Charles Sturt, from a painting by Crossland. He was born in 1795 so that he would appear to have sat for this portrait in about 1849. However, according to the Adelaide Observer for March 12 1853, page 7, column 4, Crossland's portrait of Sturt had just recently been completed.

The original is a crayon drawing. Vide letter from the Mitchell Library April 24, 1952" Under the portrait are the following words " Captain Sir Charles Sturt KCMG of 39th Regiment. Born about 1800....Died 1869. In 1828 discovered the Rivers Daring and Bogan and traced the Murrumbidgee to its source. In 1829 discovered Lake Alexandrina a great inland sea. 1844 Cooper's Creek. His discoveries virtually established South Australia. In 1839 Surveyor General Commissioner for Lands and in 1848 Colonial Secretary".

Charles Sturt's residence, 19 Clarence Square, Cheltenham, England. Charles Sturt lived here from 1863- 1869. The British explorer of Australia is remembered as an ideal family man. He was a careful and accurate observer and an intelligent interpreter of what he saw. He prided himself on his impeccable treatment of Aboriginals and earned the respect and liking of his men.
