Summary

Captain Charles Sturt. Notes on the back of the photograph states " the original portrait is in the possession of the Australasian Pioneers' Club, Sydney to which body it was presented by Phillip W Lethbridge. The original is a crayon drawing. Vide letter from the Mitchell Library April 24, 1952" Under the portrait are the following words " Captain Sir Charles Sturt KCMG of 39th Regiment. Born about 1800....Died 1869. In 1828 discovered the Rivers Daring and Bogan and traced the Murrumbidgee to its source. In 1829 discovered Lake Alexandrina a great inland sea. 1844 Cooper's Creek. His discoveries virtually established South Australia. In 1839 Surveyor General Commissioner for Lands and in 1848 Colonial Secretary".
