David Jones store, Rundle Street

A black & white photographic postcard of the Charles Birks (later David Jones) store in Rundle Street, the section of which is now Rundle Mall. Writing on the verso reads 'Rundle Mall Store circa 1920. David Jones Celebrates 155 years...'. The photograph was found under the floorboards in a weatherboard house from Sturt which was transported to Auburn. This may have been a heritage card given as gifts to staff at David Jones.

Procession from Crafers through the main street of Stirling West to Stirling East that preceeded the Stirling West carnival to raise funds for the Red Cross Prisoners of War Fund. The Mail of 26 January 1918 reported, "The procession was headed by the Mount Lofty Brass Band, and among the bodies marching were the children of the Crafers, Upper Sturt, and Scott's Creek Public Schools....At Stirling East the pageant was augmented by a procession which came from Aldgate. This section included the Mitcham Camp Band, the children of the Aldgate, Heathfield, Bridgewater, and Stirling East Public Schools". The banner in this group belongs to the 'Pride of the Hills Lodge' of the United Ancient Order of Druids and bears the names of brothers who had enlisted.

A researcher has suggested that this photograph may have been taken at Lock 7, which was completed at the end of 1934. William James Bonsor married Olive (Ollie) Christina Adams at the end of 1928 while working at Lock 4. The Bonsors and the Adams families were all employed at Lock 7 in 1934.

A researcher has provided the following information: this photo had to have been taken between 1927 and 1929 when Lock 4 was underway. On 13 March 1927 a meeting of the Lock Four Football Club was held in the town hall with Mr B. Warren presiding. The question of joining one of the river football associations was discussed and it was decided to apply for admission to the Renmark (Upper Murray) association. The colours selected for the club were red and black, subject to approval of the association. It was resolved to prepare a ground immediately. They joined the Loxton-Browns Well Association. From the Adelaide Chronicle, 19 September 1929, 'Staff and employees have been prominent in sports and the lock for four football team have been premiers of the Loxton-Browns' Well Association of the past three years'.
