Visit by 63 school children from Leigh's Creek, Beltana, and Wilson state schools to Port Augusta on 6 December 1907. "They had been at the schools' exhibition at Quorn on the previous day and Mr Nadebaum, of the Leighs Creek School, having promised his pupils a sight of the sea, the Acting Director (Mr Maughan) arranged to have the idea enlarged, and scholars of the other schools joined in the outing....The Mayor (Mr T. Hewitson) and Mr J. Holdsworth (Chairman of the Board of Advice) met the children at the station. The mayor welcomed them, and intimated that a visit to the shipping, beach and a trip on the gulf had been arranged." (Port Augusta Dispatch 13 December 1907, page 2.).

Post Office and Town Hall of Port Augusta was erected in 1886-87. The main hall was destroyed by fire in 1944. The Town Hall was built of brownstone from Quorn, decorated with Ionic columns and gables either side of the square clock tower.

Saltia Hotel, Saltia

Saltia Hotel, Saltia

Saltia Hotel. David Lithgow was the licensee in the early 1880s. Copy in Sweet Collection folder 5 has Sweet signature (Sweet Adelaide 397). Saltia was a town between Port Augusta and Quorn. The hotel as built in 1859 to service the bullock drivers and the proprietor was David Lithgow. A school was established in 1864 with twenty students. Evening classes were available for students who could not attend during the daytime. By 1880 there were forty three students attending the school. Thomas Lees house was demolished to make way for the railwayline and later the town died as there was no need for the bullock teams to stop at Saltia. A famous son of Saltia was John Maslin (1826-1908) who was a sheep property owner.

Railway Bridge at Saltia Creek, near Port Augusta. This railway bridge is known locally as the "Lattice Bridge", and is located on the Port Augusta side of Woolshed Flat. Sweet Adelaide 418. A researcher has suggested that this bridge is located on the Quorn side of Woolshed Flat, not the Port Augusta side. The bridge is over the Waukarie Creek at Woolshed Flat, just before it converges with the Saltia Creek.

Christian Traugott Leberecht Leopold, son of Johann Carl (Karl) Friedrich Leopold and Johanne Luise Caroline Leopold, nee Preller. Christian was born on 19 October 1845 in Bethany, South Australia. He married Louise Pauline Liebech on 16 July 1868 at Greenock, South Australia. He died on 11 August 1930 at Quorn, South Australia.

Freemason's Tavern, Pirie Street, south side. The far side of the hotel is 64 yards east of Gawler Place. The frontage is 15 yards. The hotel existed since 1841 and at the time of this photograph the proprietor was Mrs L Murray. The hotel was known as the Freemansons Hotel from 1886. The owner appears to be WA Jones who, according to a banner on the hotel, was late of the Freemasons Tavern at Wilmington and Quorn.

The house stood back from Franklin Street about 8yds. and its back (on the right) was about 55 yds. west of Morphett St. Owned & occupied by Joseph Mellor(1808-1880) (manufacturer of agricultural implements) It was demolished in 1890's. Mellor and Brothers was a farm implement manufacturers in Adelaide circa 1868. Branches operated from Franklin Street, Kapunda, Jamestown and Quorn.
