Leslie Andrew Wilkie

Leslie A. Wilkie, Australian artist. He was born in Melbourne, 1878 and educated at Brunswick College, Victoria. He became President of SA Society of Artists in 1932 and undertook further study in Europe in 1904, later becoming Curator of the Art Gallery of SA. In 1934 he painted portraits of Aboriginals near Cooper Creek during an anthropological expedition to Central Australia. He died in Adelaide after an appendix operation in 1935.

Portrait of Algernon Theodore King Wilson, Queen's Counsel, born 7 August 1863 at Kensington SA; married to Lillian Charlotte Laurence at St. Michael's Church, Mitcham, 27 November 1895; and died at St. Peters 15 August 1925 aged 62. He was a founding member of the Philatelic Society of South Australia in 1888 and its President from 1909 to 1911. [General description] This portrait shows Dr. Woodforde seated and resting an elbow on a small table. He wears a dark suit with frock coat and a chin strap beard. He was the ship's surgeon on the 'Rapid' and upon arrival in the colony was appointed by Colonel Light as surgeon to the Survey Department at Rapid Bay. He later established a private practice in Hindley Street. He was appointed Coroner for Adelaide in 1857. [On back of photograph] 'John Woodforde, M.D. / Medical advisor to Colonel Light. Arrived in South Australia on the 'Rapid' in 1836 / presented by Miss Meliora O'Halloran'.

He was the first person to present real weather forecasts in Australia and originated the use of names for weather systems. He is regarded by many as the 'father of modern meteorology'.

He was the first Inspector of the State Bank, Mayor of Henley and Grange and was an earnest church worker. He was married and had seven children

He was a pioneering grazier in the mid north of South Australia who, together with his brothers John and Sidney made a journey up to northern Queensland to open up new grazing country, enduring much hardship. He ended his career as the Town Clerk at Jamestown. [General description] This is a portrait of John Lorenzo Young. He is seated in three quarter view, turning to face the camera. In the 1860s, with his brother Oliver, he founded the Adelaide Educational Institution which grew into the largest private independent school in South Australia. In 1872 new premises were built at Parkside in Young Street (named after the schoolmaster). For a photograph of the school, See B 1843.

Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Zilm

[General description] Upper body portrait of the subject, seated and holding a book. He sports distinctive long side whiskers and is wearing a dark three piece suit. His Lutheran family arrived on the Bengalee from Hamburg having fled their native Goltzen, a village near Brandenburg after religious persecution from Prussian authorities. They were involved with fifty other German families in the founding of Hahndorf. Johann Wilhelm (called Wilhelm by his family) eventually settled near Booleroo Centre, selecting 450 acres, clearing it to grow wheat and establishing a homestead. This property was named 'Pantakora'. Wilhelm was a talented carpenter, producing a number of items of furniture some of which are on display at the National Museum (Zilm Collection). [On back of photograph] 'Johann Friedrich Wilhelm / Arrived 19th November, 1838 / Died at Booleroo Centre / 29th January, 1906, aged 79 / Son of Johann Christian and Anna Dorothea (his first wife) / nee Mattiske)' with his parents Johaan Christian and Anna Dorothea. According to a researcher, Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Zilm, eldest son of Johann Christian Zilm and Anna Dorothea nee Mattiscke, was born in 1827 in Goltzen Brandenburg Prussia. Emigrated to South Australia with parents and younger brother Johann Friedrich in November 1838 on the Bengalee. Settled at Hahndorf, then Nain in the Barossa before moving and pioneering the Booleroo Centre area. Married Johanne Louise Urbasch and had 10 children. Died in 1906 and is buried at the Willowie Lutheran cemetery.

In 2013 Artlab Australia conservators removed the photographs and original support paper from backing cardboard and reassembled the complete mosaic using acid-free materials.
