John Stephens
[General description] This is a portrait of John Stephens, seated at a table with a copy of the 'Christian Advocate', a paper he helped found in 1832. He emigrated to Adelaide in 1843 where he founded The Adelaide Observer and acquired the South Australian Register in June 1845. George Stevenson
[General description] This is a photograph of a gilt-framed portrait of George Stevenson. Born in 1799 in Berwick-on-Tweed, U.K., he sailed to South Australia on the 'Buffalo' as private secretary to Captain John Hindmarsh. In partnership with Robert Thomas, who brought out the printing plant on the Africaine in November 1836, he published the first edition of the South Australian Gazette and Colonial Register in Adelaide on June 3, 1837. His newspaper career came to an end in 1842 when Adelaide was affected by economic downturn. He was a keen gardener, experimenting with a wide variety of vines, fruit and vegetables in his garden at Adelaide. Due to this work he became widely known as "the father of horticulture in South Australia". Alexander Stewart
[General description] Upper body portrait of Mr Alexander Stewart. He was a pioneering grazier for some years but was eventually driven out of the pastoral business by harsh seasonal conditions. He then took up the lease of the White Hart Hotel in Aberdeen, Burra, and later built the Bon Accord Hotel in the same place. He left his career as a Master Mariner in the British Navy to become one of Australia's first great outdoor photographers.
Samuel White Sweet
[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Samuel White Sweet. He wears a double breasted jacket and a colourful cravat and sports mutton chop whiskers. He was a sea captain who retired from the sea in 1875 and opened up a photographic studio in Adelaide. He travelled through South Australia in his horse-drawn darkroom photographing landscapes, outback stations and homesteads. A large collection of his work is held in the South Australian Archives.

[General description] This portrait of Sir Josiah Henry Symon, lawyer, politician and federationalist, shows his head and shoulders in seven eights view. He is grey haired with a moustache and wears a polka dot bow tie. His face is lit to provide contrast with the dark background. The photograph bears a signature which reads; 'Most truly yours, J.H. Symon' and beneath it '17 Feby. 1927 / Photo taken March 1919' (Another hand) 'For biographical particulars see Who's Who in Australasia' One of Adelaide's prominent citizens, he was a philanthropist donating to many public institutions with a particular interest in Minda Home.

Andrew Tennant
[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Andrew Tennant in three quarter view. He was a small child when his family arrived in the colony on the Duchess of Northumberland in December 1839. He grew up to become a successful grazier, owning several sheep stations in the north of South Australia, also had interests in mining companies, the South Australia Company and the Adelaide Steamship Co. He was a generous patron of the turf, owning and breeding racehorses. He was also a Member of Parliament in both houses.
Sir Robert Kyffin Thomas
[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Sir Robert Kyffin Thomas, the subject facing left. His hair is worn short and he has a trim moustache. In 1877 he became the principal joint proprietor of the South Australian Register, and also edited the Observer. He was knighted in 1910 and died soon after at his home, Ardington on Brougham Place North Adelaide. For a photograph, see B 3459.
Robert Thomas
[General description] Portrait of grey haired Robert Thomas, seated with one hand resting on a table. He wears a dark jacket, light waistcoat and bow tie. He has mutton- chop whiskers. He came with his wife Mary and children to South Australia on the 'Africaine', arriving in Holdfast Bay in November 1836. He founded the publishing firm of R. Thomas & Co, which started the 'Register' newspaper and acquired the 'Adelaide Chronicle'. He prospered for a time but economic hardships rendered the firm insolvent in 1842.

Henry William Thompson
[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Henry William Thompson in seven eighths view. He wears impressive mutton chop whiskers. He was a seaman who left the sea and went to work for Clarke, McKenzie & Co., ships' chandlers of Port Adelaide, later a member of the Port Adelaide Council, then Mayor from 1881-2. He won a seat in the Legislative Concil for the Central District in May 1902.
Sir Charles Todd
[General description] This is a shadowy head and upper body portrait of Sir Charles Todd in later life. He is facing left and has greying hair, moustache and beard. Arriving in Adelaide in 1855, he became Postmaster General, Superintendent of Telegraphs and Government Astronomer of South Australia. The most famous of his many achievements was his conception and leadership of the installation of the Port Augusta- Darwin overland single-wire telegraph line which linked Australia to the rest of the world in 1872. In June 1893 he was made K.C.M.G.

[General description] This is a moodily lit artistic portrait of Sir Charles Todd as a dignified elderly gentleman. A man of many parts, he was an astronomer, meteorologist, electrical engineer and public servant. He is best known for his leadership of the establishment of the overland (from Adelaide to Darwin) single-wire telegraph line which linked Australia to the rest of the world in 1872. He was appointed C.M.G in 1872 and promoted to K.C.M.G in 1893.

He was an astronomer, meteorologist, electrical engineer and public service department head (Postmaster-General &Superintendent of Telegraphs) best known for his work on the Overland Telegraph linking Australia with London. Alexander Tolmer
[General description] Head and shoulders portrait in seven eighths view of Alexander Tolmer, colonial militiaman, and mounted policeman who was Inspector of Mounted Police from 1840. He was very successful in that role, spending much time in the bush pursuing bushrangers, cattle duffers and other miscreants and quelling trouble between whites and Aborigines. He was appointed Commissioner of Police from January 1852 during which time he established the gold escort from Victoria to South Australia. He was demoted to Superintendent in November 1853.
